FOREST PARK, Ill. - The Dominican University
Stars scored all five of their runs over two innings to defeat the
Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors 5-0 on Wednesday in the Northern
Athletics Conference opener for both teams.
After 2.1 scoreless innings, the Stars scored first, plating
three runs in the bottom of the third on five hits. The Warriors
threatened in their next half inning by loading the bases with two
outs, but were unable to cross a run home.
WLC held Dominican off the scoreboard until the sixth when it
scored a pair of runs on two hits to go in front 5-0. The visiting
Warriors' first two batters reached base in the seventh, but a
double play ended any hopes of a comeback.
Junior Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran), sophomore
Stephanie Sack (Granger, Ind./Michigan Lutheran) and freshman
Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) each had a
hit for the Warriors in the game. Senior Jenny Boelk (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) allowed five earned runs in 5.2 innings of
work and was handed the loss.
Sarah Budz, Kristen Look and Nikki Burris each went 2-for-3 for
the Stars (8-3, 1-0 NAC). Jori Cicale pitched all 7.0 innings and
fanned 10 to earn the victory in the circle for DU.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-6, 0-1 NAC) faces the Stars in the second
game of its conference-opening doubleheader at 5 p.m. on
Wednesday.
