MILWAUKEE - The WLC softball team dropped the
first game of a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader to the
Marian University Sabres by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday
afternoon at Warrior Field.
The Sabres played small ball, scoring a run on one hit in the
first inning, for the early 1-0 lead. WLC was retired in order in
its first four innings before sophomore Maggie Mueller
(Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) became the first runner to
reach base in the fifth when she was hit by a pitch.
Marian went in front 2-0 in the sixth on an RBI double by Maria
Archie. The Warriors threatened in the sixth by loading the bases
after two outs on back-to-back singles and a walk, but junior Katie
Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) flew out to center to end the
inning.
Senior Jenny Boelk (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and
freshman Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) each went 1-for-3 for
the Warriors. Boelk also went the distance in the circle,
surrendering two runs on five hits (1-6).
Emilie Jansen and Maria Archie had two hits each for the Sabres
(10-4, 3-0 NAC). Jansen also scored both of Marian's runs. Jamie
Whitehead tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, while allowing two hits and
striking out six to pick up the win (2-0).
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-12, 0-7 NAC) hosts the Sabres in the
second game of its doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Warrior
Field.
