MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team was clipped by the Edgewood College Eagles 5-4 on
Sunday in the first game of a Northern Athletics Conference
doubleheader at Warrior Field.
The Eagles scored two quick runs on a pair of hits in the first
inning for an early 2-0 lead. The Warriors came back to tie the
game at 2-2 in the third on RBIs from sophomore Maggie Mueller
(Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) and freshman Katie Timm
(Franklin, Wis./Franklin).
Visiting Edgewood jumped back in front the following inning by
scoring two runs, while adding another in the fifth for a 5-2 lead.
WLC trimmed its deficit to just a run in the fifth by plating a
pair of runs as junior Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran)
and freshman Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
each had run-scoring hits.
However, Wisconsin Lutheran's chances to tie the game ended
quickly over the last two innings as the Eagles retired in the side
in order during each of the final two frames.
Sloan and senior Jenny Boelk (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran) each had two hits for the Warriors, while Mueller, Timm,
Sloan and Mantz added RBIs. Boelk tossed all 7.0 innings in the
circle, allowing five runs, four of which were earned, on nine
hits. She fanned six batters and walked three in the loss (1-7)
Jessica Spitzer went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for
the Eagles (5-8, 3-2 NAC). EC's Rachel Elliott pitched 4.2 innings
for earn the win, while Claire Blake came on in relief to toss the
final 2.1 hitless innings for the save.
The Warriors (3-14, 0-9 NAC) host Edgewood in the second game of
their doubleheader on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Warrior Field.
