MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team held off the Alverno College Inferno by a final score
of 4-2 on Sunday in the first game of a Northern Athletics
Conference doubleheader at Alverno Field.
Sophomore Morgan Dittmar (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran)
gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she
belted her first home run of the season to left center. The Inferno
tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single
from Jessica Goetz.
The Warriors grabbed the lead back, 2-1, in the fourth on a
Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) two-out RBI double that
plated freshman Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin). Following a
scoreless fifth inning, WLC extended its lead to 4-1 on a two-run
double from sophomore Stephanie Sack (Granger, Ind./Michigan
Lutheran) which scored Sloan and freshman Lauren Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran).
Alverno loaded the bases via three straight one-out singles in
the bottom of the fifth, but managed to score only one run in the
frame. AC, which left at least one runner on base in six of seven
innings, stranded the bases loaded as the Warriors escaped out of
the jam.
After the Warriors went down in order in the seventh, the
Inferno had a runner reach base with two outs, but she was held at
first as the game ended.
Sloan finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for WLC,
while Sack, who was one of five players to record a hit, tallied
two RBIs. Timm tossed all 7.0 innings and gave up just two earned
runs on nine hits. She struck out 10 on her way to earning her
fifth win (5-6) of the season in the circle.
Megan Burgess went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Inferno
(8-19, 2-9 NAC), who left nine runners on base. Seven other players
each recorded a hit in the contest. Despite fanning 14, Goetz took
the loss (8-16) after giving up four runs, all earned, on seven
hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-17, 3-12 NAC) battles the Inferno in the
second game of its doubleheader on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Alverno
Field.
