The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team lost the first game
of a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader to Concordia
Chicago University by a score of 4-0 Thursday afternoon at Grace
Diamond.
Senior starting pitcher Jenny Boelk (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran) and Concordia Chicago starter Sami DeFord were locked in
a pitching duel for the majority of the game. The Cougars scored a
run on two hits in the second inning. Boelk responded by retiring
the next six Concordia batters. The game remained 1-0 until the
Cougars busted out with three runs on four hits in the sixth
inning.
The WLC offense could not string any hits together until the
seventh inning, when it rallied with three hits, but DeFord got out
of the jam to complete the shutout victory (4-10).
Sophomore Maggie Mueller (Mt. Calvary, Wis./Campbellsport) was
2-for-3 for the Warriors with a double.
Colleen Mullaney was 2-for-3 for the Cougars with two runs
scored and an RBI. Cassie Slechta had two hits with an RBI and
Clarissa Geiseke added two RBIs.
DeFord threw 7.0 shutout innings for Concordia Chicago and gave
up six hits. She had nine strikeouts and walked none.
Boelk received the loss (1-5) as she allowed four earned runs in
5.1 innings. She struck out four hitters, walked none, and gave up
nine hits. Freshman Kayla Peterson (Lewiston,
Minn./Lewiston-Altura) came in relief in the seventh and induced a
double play to get out of the inning.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-10, 0-5 NAC) faces the Cougars (4-17, 3-2
NAC) again in the second game of its conference doubleheader at
4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
