AURORA, Ill. - The Aurora University Spartans
collected a 7-0 shutout win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday in
the first game of a Northern Athletics Conference softball
doubleheader at the Stuart Sportsplex.
After the Warriors were held scoreless in the top of the first
inning, the Spartans used two hits and a stolen base to take a 1-0
lead. Following a pair of scoreless frames, AU made it 4-0 in the
fourth by putting together three hits and taking advantage of two
errors by the Warriors.
While WLC was held scoreless again in the fifth, Aurora added a
single tally in the bottom of the inning before scoring its final
two runs of the game in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
Senior Jenny Boelk (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) was
the only Warrior to manage a hit in the game, which came in the
third inning. Freshman Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) and junior Laura Konop (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) also
reached base via walks and a hit-by-pitch, but neither was able to
cross the plate.
Freshman Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) allowed four
earned runs in 6.0 of work to take the loss (8-9) in the
circle.
Aurora (31-7, 21-2 NAC) was paced at the plate by Karisa Hansen,
Shannon Starr and Kayla Westemeier, who tallied seven of the teams'
14 hits and scored four of the seven runs. Anna Snyder threw a
complete-game one-hit shutout to pick up the win (20-5). She struck
out 16 of the 24 batters she faced and walked two.
Wisconsin Lutheran (11-24, 6-17 NAC) will battle the Spartans
again in game two of its doubleheader and final game of the season
at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stuart Sportsplex.
