MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team was unable to hold onto the lead in both of its games
Thursday afternoon, falling to the Dominican University Stars 3-1
and 9-6 in its home and conference opener at Warrior Field.
The Warriors scored first in the third inning of the first game
after freshman Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale)
singled home freshman Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale)
for the 1-0 lead.
After WLC shutdown the Stars through the first five innings, DU
accumulated six of its 10 hits and scored all three of its runs
over the final two frames of the game. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom
of the sixth, WLC had a chance to take the lead back, but stranded
runners on second and third when the inning came to a close.
Bykowski finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while
senior Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) was 2-for-3 to
lead the Warriors. Sophomore Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin)
fanned six in seven innings in the circle for WLC.
Wisconsin Lutheran jumped on top of the Stars early in the
nightcap, scoring four times in the first inning. The Warriors
loaded the bases with no outs and sophomore Lauren Mantz (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) later belted a two-run double.
WLC plated its final two runs of the inning on a fielder's choice
and an illegal pitch.
The Stars cut WLC's lead in half in the third with a pair of
runs. It would be the first of five straight frames that the Stars
scored at least one run. DU evened the contest at 4-4 in the fifth
after it plated one run. Dominican went in front for good in the
sixth when it scored four times on four hits, highlighted by a
bases-clearing three-run double.
The Warriors got closer in the sixth by scoring twice on two
hits. Freshman Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland
Lutheran) reached home safely on a wild pitch and junior Morgan
Dittmar's (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) RBI groundout scored
Rechlicz. DU scored the game's final run in the seventh for the 9-6
score.
Bykowski once again led the way at the dish by going 3-for-4
with an RBI. Schalinske finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-9, 0-2 NAC) continues its six-game,
conference-opening homestand Saturday afternoon when it hosts
preseason NAC favorite Benedictine University at 12 p.m. at Warrior
Field.
