VERONA, Wis. - Freshman Kendra Thomas (Jenison,
Mich./Jenison) earned her first collegiate victory in the circle as
the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team split a Northern
Athletics Conference doubleheader with the Edgewood College Eagles
Sunday at Ceniti Park. The Eagles won the first game 8-0, before
WLC came back to take game two, 6-3.
The Warriors grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first when
sophomore Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) smacked a two-out,
two-run single up the middle. WLC scored its third run the next
inning when Thomas drove home freshman Mindy Schalinske
(Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) with a two-out single.
Schalinske tripled earlier in the inning.
Following two scoreless innings, the Warriors plated three runs
on three hits for a 6-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth.
Thomas reached home a fielding error and Timm followed with another
two-RBI single.
The Eagles got on the board in the fifth with a solo homerun and
added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh. EC loaded the bases
with one out and after scoring twice on errors, left the tying run
on base when the Warriors escaped out of the jam.
Thomas and Timm each finished 2-for-4 at the dish for the
Warriors. Schalinske, sophomore Lauren Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and freshman Jocelyn Bykowski
(Greendale, Wis./Greendale) also recorded hits for WLC. Thomas
struck out eight Eagles over 7.0 innings. She scattered seven hits
and walked two.
In the opener, Edgewood tallied four runs on four hits in both
the second and fourth inning on its way to defeating the Warriors
8-0 in five innings. Mantz, Thomas, Timm and senior Katie Sloan
(Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) each had hits for the Warriors.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-16, 1-9 NAC) returns to the confines of
Warrior Field on Wednesday, April 13 to host Rockford College in a
3 p.m. NAC doubleheader.
