MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team earned its first sweep of the season against Northern
Athletic Conference opponent Rockford College on Wednesday
afternoon by scores of 5-3 and 3-2 at Warrior Field.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Warriors jumped out
to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a double by Morgan
Dittmar (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) scored Kendra Thomas
(Jenison, Mich./Jenison). The Warriors held a slim lead until the
fourth inning when Rockford added two runs and another in the fifth
for a 3-1 lead.
WLC responded in the bottom of the fifth inning when Katie Sloan
(Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) hit a double that plated Mindy
Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran). Dittmar also
reached on an error that scored Sloan to tie the score at 3-3.
After holding the Regents scoreless in the top of the sixth inning,
the Warriors plated two more runs from a Lauren Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) RBI single and a hit by pitch with
the bases loaded allowed Schalinske to score. The final two runs
were enough to give Wisconsin Lutheran the 5-3 win.
Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) picked up her fourth win of
the season for the Warriors in the circle. She allowed only three
runs on seven hits, no walks and struck out seven. Offensively,
Sloan drove in two runs on 1-for-3 hitting. Mantz and Dittmar also
added one RBI, while each going 1-for-4 at the dish.
In the nightcap, RC held an early 2-0 lead after the first
inning and maintained its slim advantage until the fifth. In the
fifth, a passed ball allowed Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale,
Wis./Greendale) to score the Warriors' first run. Emily Snider (La
Crosse, Wis./Luther) drove in the second run for WLC to tie the
game at 2-2 in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh with
two outs, Dittmar smacked a double that drove in Thomas for the
game-winning RBI and 3-2 victory.
Thomas earned her second straight win of the season. She allowed
two runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk. She also struck out
six Regents. Snider and Dittmar were credited with RBIs for the
Warriors.
