Softball sweeps Alverno for fifth straight win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team added two more games to its winning streak as it swept the Inferno of Alverno College by scores of 8-0 and 7-6 in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at Warrior Field on Sunday afternoon.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Warriors scored six quick runs in the first inning to grab the lead 6-0. Along with two Inferno errors, the Warriors were able to string together a couple of hits to jump out in front. A bases-loaded walk proved to be all WLC needed as it went on to run-rule Alverno by a score of 8-0 in five innings.

Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was a dominating factor in the game as she held Alverno to just one hit. She struck out five en route to her fifth victory of the year.

The Warriors came out strong in game two of the twinbill and took the early lead 5-0 after Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) hit a two-out grand slam in the first frame. WLC added another in the third when Emily Snider (La Crosse, Wis./Luther) singled in Timm to extend the lead to 6-0. Alverno fought back and scored in three straight innings to tie the ballgame at 6-6 in the sixth. After a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, junior Morgan Dittmar (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) doubled with two outs in the ninth and Timm followed with a walk-off single to bring home Dittmar for the game-winning run.

Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) and Timm combined to throw all nine innings. Thomas pitched a strong 5.1 innings, striking out one and giving up five earned runs. Timm came in relief in the sixth and gave up only one hit while striking out two and earning the win for the Warriors. Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), Thomas, Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran), and Snider each had multi-hit games for WLC. Rechlicz added four RBI with her grand slam.

Wisconsin Lutheran (8-16, 5-9 NAC) will travel downtown Thursday to face cross-town rival MSOE in a 3 p.m. NAC doubleheader at MSOE Athletic Field.
