MEQUON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team split a doubleheader against Northern Athletics
Conference opponent Lakeland College (9-21, 9-7 NAC) Tuesday
afternoon, winning the first game 4-2, before dropping the second
10-8. The games were moved to Mequon from Sheboygan due to weather
and field conditions.
Game one saw Lakeland take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of
the first inning. The Warriors responded in the second when Kendra
Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) scored on a passed ball. WLC would
add two more in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead after a Morgan
Dittmar (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) double plated Katie
Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) and Emily Snider (La Crosse,
Wis./Luther). In the fifth, Mindy Schalinske (Burlington,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) grounded out to shortstop but it was
enough for Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) to score,
pushing the lead to 4-1. LC added its final run in the bottom of
the fifth but that was all it would get as the Warriors won the
opener, 4-2.
Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) picked up the complete game
win for WLC. She allowed two runs on six hits, while racking up
five strikeouts. Dittmar led the offensive attack by going 1-for-2
with two RBI. Schalinske recorded the only other RBI for Wisconsin
Lutheran.
In game two, WLC put two runs on the board in the first inning.
A Dittmar groundout scored Schalinske, while Lauren Mantz (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) doubled home Sloan. The Muskies
would answer in the bottom frame with two runs to tie the game 2-2.
The Warriors added three more runs off of RBIs from Rechlicz, Sloan
and Dittmar. LC would once again add two runs of its own but still
trailed WLC 5-4 after the second inning.
Rechlicz drove in another run in the top of the third inning to
put WLC up by two, 6-4. The fourth inning saw Lakeland capture its
first lead of the game by scoring three runs for a 7-6 score.
WLC temporarily tied the game in the top of the fifth after
Daetona Laurence (Wildomar, Calif./California Lutheran) scored on a
wild pitch, but LC added one of its own in the bottom of the inning
and two more in the sixth to regain the lead at 10-7. After a
promising start to the seventh, WLC was only able to add one run,
falling 10-8.
Timm took the loss in the nightcap after coming in relief of
Thomas in the second inning. She allowed six runs on 12 hits.
Offensively, Rechlicz and Dittmar each drove in a pair of runs on
3-for-4 and 1-for-4 hitting, respectively. Mantz and Sloan also
drove in one run each.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-21, 6-14 NAC) returns to the diamond
tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against North
Park University (16-14). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at
Warrior Field.
