MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with North Park
University (17-15) Wednesday at Warrior Field. The Warriors
suffered a 15-0 loss in the opener, but bounced back to win the
second game 5-4 in extra innings.
North Park's steady offense put up runs in every inning. The
Vikings took the lead early with four runs in the first inning and
continued to build on their lead. After the third, North Park held
a 7-0 lead and scored its final eight runs over the last two
frames. The contest was called after five innings via run-rule.
Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) and Katie Sloan
(Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) were the only Warriors able to fill
in the hit column, tabulating one hit each.
The Warriors put the results of the opener behind them and
turned the tables in the nightcap. After a scoreless first by both
teams, Wisconsin Lutheran was able to match the run North Park
scored in the top half of the second inning from a double by Kelsi
Daffner (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) that plated Bykowski
in the bottom half of the frame.
There was no scoring in the third inning but North Park put up
three runs in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. WLC responded in the
bottom of the fourth with an RBI double by Jenny Rechlicz (West
Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) for a 4-2 deficit. A sac fly by Emily
Snider (La Crosse, Wis./Luther) and a Bykowski RBI single tied the
game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
The game remained knotted at 4-4 until the bottom of the ninth
inning. Morgan Dittmar's (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran)
one-out double allowed Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) to score the game-winning run. Mantz singled to leadoff
the inning.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) picked up her third win
of the season after throwing all nine innings. She allowed four
runs on seven hits, while striking out five. The Warriors received
a balanced RBI attack as Dittmar, Snider, Bykowski, Daffner and
Rechlicz each drove in one run. Dittmar was also 3-for-5 at the
plate.
Wisconsin Lutheran (10-22, 6-14 NAC) will return to action
Saturday when they face off against NAC opponent Maranatha Baptist
Bible College (7-21, 1-15 NAC) in Watertown, Wis. First pitch is
scheduled for 12 p.m. at Brandt-Quirk Park.
