WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College softball team completed a doubleheader sweep over Northern
Athletics Conference opponent Maranatha Baptist Bible College
(7-27, 1-21 NAC) Saturday afternoon at Brandt-Quirk Park. The
Warriors won the opener 13-1 in five innings before taking game two
10-5.
The Warriors offense came alive early in the first game as they
put up five runs in the second inning. Kendra Thomas (Jenison,
Mich./Jenison) doubled in two runs, Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis,
Wis./Nathan Hale) singled in two runs and Katie Timm (Franklin,
Wis./Franklin) drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI
single.
Wisconsin Lutheran added three more in the top of the third
inning from RBIs by Emily Snider (La Crosse, Wis./Luther) and
Thomas for an 8-0 lead.
The final five runs for the Warriors came in the top of the
fourth to put the game out of reach. The only run the Crusaders
were able to put on the board came in the bottom of the fourth
inning. The game ended in the fifth due to run-rule.
Timm earned the win, pitching all five innings. She allowed just
one run on nine hits, while striking out eight. Offensively, Thomas
drove in four runs, while Rechlicz drove in three. Thomas and
Rechlicz also scored two runs each while going 2-for-3 at the
plate.
In the nightcap, WLC put up three runs in the top of the first
inning by receiving RBIs from a Lauren Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) single, Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale,
Wis./Greendale) walk and a Snider sacrifice fly. MBBC added a run
of its own in the bottom of the inning to trail 3-1 after the
first.
In the third inning, RBI singles from Mantz and Bykowski, along
with an RBI double from Snider and two-RBI double from Kelsi
Daffner (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) gave the Warriors an
8-1 lead. MBBC scored two runs in the bottom of the frame and one
in the sixth to trail 8-4.
The final two runs for WLC came from a Snider two-run double in
the top of the seventh, while the Crusaders added their final run
in the bottom of the inning to put the final margin of victory for
the Warriors at 10-5.
Thomas tossed all seven innings, allowing five runs (three
earned), eight hits and strucking out five. Snider led all hitters
with four RBI by going 2-for-2. Mantz and Bykowski added two RBIs
each, while Daffner added one.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-22, 8-14 NAC) returns home to Warrior
Field Sunday for its final two games of the 2011 season against the
Aurora University Spartans (26-8, 18-2 NAC). First pitch is set for
Noon.
