FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Wisconsin Lutheran played a
total of 23 innings in a doubleheader matchup with the Sabres of
Marian University Saturday at Smith Fields. The home-standing
Sabres snagged victories in the 13-inning opening game (4-3) and in
the 10-inning nightcap (11-7).
The scoreboard in game one displayed goose eggs until Marian
jumped on the board in the bottom of the third inning with two runs
on four hits. The Warriors responded immediately in the next half
inning earning a run of their own. The score remained 2-1 until the
seventh inning when the Warriors tied the score 2-2 when Jocelyn
Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) advanced home on a wild
pitch.
The Warriors struck first in extra innings when Morgan Dittmar
(Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) crossed the plate in the ninth
inning. The Sabres were quick to answer with a run of their own.
Pitchers dueled and defenses battled, and the game continued on
into a 13th inning. Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) led off the inning with a single, but the Warriors were
unable to bring her home. In the bottom of the inning, Marian's
first two batters singled and Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin),
who was in the circle for the Warriors, was forced to intentionally
walk a runner to load the bases. Katlin Jarvis then put the ball in
play and earned an RBI as she advanced her teammate home for a
Sabres 4-3 victory.
Mantz led the hitting attack for the Warriors with a 3-for-6
performance, while Timm and Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska
Lutheran) each added two hits. Timm pitched all 13 innings for the
Warriors and recorded 13 strikeouts.
The Warriors came out strong in game two and put two runs on the
board in the first inning. In the second inning, the Warriors bats
raked in two more runs. The Sabres matched the Warriors in the
bottom of the inning bringing the score to 4-2. In inning four,
Sloan and Dittmar both singled and Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis,
Wis./Nathan Hale) advanced both runners across the plate with a
two-RBI double. The Sabres also added a run in their half of the
inning (6-3). Wisconsin Lutheran and Marian each gained a run in
the fifth. The sixth inning remained scoreless for both teams and
the Sabres came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh trailing
7-4. Five hits from Sabres batters propelled the hosts to even the
score and sent the game into extra innings for the second time on
the day.
The first two extra frames did not merit any runs and the score
remained tied 7-7. The bottom of the 10th inning proved to be the
Warriors demise as Marian loaded the bases and ended the game with
a walk-off grand slam.
Sloan finished 4-for-5 to lead the Warriors bats in the
nightcap. Pitcher Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) struck out
two batters in 4.0 innings of work for the Warriors. Timm relieved
Thomas in the 5th and fanned a pair over the final five innings of
play.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-15, 0-8 NAC) travels to face Edgewood
College in a 12 p.m. NAC doubleheader Sunday at Ceniti Park in
