Second-place Spartans sweep Warriors on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team was swept by Northern Athletics Conference opponent Aurora University 11-3 and 7-5 Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Warrior Field.

The Warriors got in a hole early as they surrendered runs in each of the first three innings. They finally got things rolling in the bottom of the third when freshman infielder Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) led off the inning with a single. Freshman Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) reached on a fielder's choice and senior Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) singled to load the bases. Junior catcher Morgan Dittmar (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) then singled to bring in two runs and freshman Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) singled to bring in another. The Warriors scored three to narrow the deficit to 10-3, but that was as close as they would get.

The Warriors posted five hits compared to Aurora's 14 in the loss. Sophomore Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) suffered the loss as she went the distance against the hot-hitting Spartans.

In the second game, both teams started hot at the plate. Aurora came out swinging and scored two runs in the first, which were matched by WLC. The Spartans scored another in the top of the second and headed into the bottom of the inning with a 3-2 lead. That did not last long as the Warriors tallied three runs on one hit and an AU error. Dittmar brought in all three runs with a double. WLC battled hard, but in the end Aurora came out on top when the Warriors surrendered two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to make the final score 7-5.

Freshman Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) suffered the loss for the Warriors, giving up 15 hits in six innings. Dittmar led the way for WLC, going 2-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBI.

The Warriors honored their only senior, Sloan, prior to both games of the doubleheader.

Wisconsin Lutheran finishes its 2011 season 12-24 overall and 8-16 in the NAC.
