MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's soccer team scored a season-high seven goals as they
defeated Lakeland 7-0 Saturday on Senior Day at Warrior Field.
Junior Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) recorded a hat-trick
for WLC Saturday as she began the scoring at the 13:29 mark,
scoring off a pass from senior Mel Lemke (Brookfield, Wis./Central)
for the 1-0 lead.
Lemke added a scoring tally just over two minutes later as she
netted her goal off a Sarah Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) assist for a 2-0 advantage. Lemke was one of two seniors
who were honored before the game for Senior Day, along with Aubrey
Breuckman (Burlington, Wis./Burlington).
Smith netted her second goal of the contest at the 24:48 mark,
this time scoring unassisted to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead which
stood for the remainder of the first half.
The Warriors outshot Lakeland 13-4 in the opening half as eight
of WLC's 13 shots were on goal. Lakeland goalkeeper Ali Thompson
stopped five shots in the first half. Kate Gucinski (Appleton,
Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) made two first-half saves for Wisconsin
Lutheran.
The Warriors added four more goals in the second half, the first
coming off the foot of Nicole DiSalvo (Waterford, Wis./Waterford)
as she scored 2:59 after halftime off a Cari Westover (Muskego,
Wis./Muskego) assist.
Smith completed her hat trick on a penalty kick at the 59:35
mark, recording her team-best fifth goal of the season. Breuckman
added her second goal of the season at the 85 minute mark and Sarah
Luebke (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) tallied the seventh and
final goal off a Tori Albrecht (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) pass.
For the game, WLC outshot the Muskies 24-6, including firing 17
of 24 shots on net. Gucinski stopped three shots en route to the
shutout victory. Smith led the Warriors with five shots
offensively. Lakeland (3-13-0, 2-9-0 NAC) had six different players
tally one shot in the loss.
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-7-3, 4-5-1 NAC) returns to the pitch
Tuesday night when it hosts Alverno (5-12-0, 1-10-0 NAC) at Warrior
Field. The Warriors and Inferno are slated to start at 7 p.m.
