ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's basketball team dropped its 2012-2013 season opener
to Macalester 62-51 in a non-conference game Friday night at the
Leonard Center.
The Warriors, who shot 30.8 percent (8-for-26) in the first
half, never were able to take the lead in the opening stanza. With
WLC trailing 17-14 with 5:48 left in the first half, the Scots
closed out the half on a 14-4 run to take a 31-20 lead into the
halftime break.
Nate Bauer (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored six point
in the first half to lead WLC, which was outscored 9-0 on
second-chance points. Pierce Peters netted a first-half high 14
points for Macalester, which shot 34.3 percent (12-for-35) from the
floor in the opening half.
Macalester opened the second half by outscoring Wisconsin
Lutheran 7-1 through the first 4:19 to build its largest lead of
the game at 40-21. The Warriors were able to close within six
points, 54-48, at the 2:29 mark, but could not get any closer as
the Scots won by 11 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran fired on just 25 percent (7-for-28) of its
shots in the second half, opposed to a stifling 57.9 percent
(11-for-19) for Macalester.
Bauer concluded the game with 15 points to lead the Warriors,
who shot 27.8 percent (15-for-54) from the floor for the game.
Russell Strutz (Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) added 10
points and was the only other Warrior to finish in double figures.
Julion Griffin (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) pulled down
nine rebounds to lead the Warriors, who were narrowly outmuscled on
the glass, 41-37.
Peters led all scorers with 18 points for the Scots (1-0), while
Sam Marshall and Dylan Kilgour chipped in with 13 and 12 points,
respectively. For the game, Macalester shot 42.6 percent
(23-for-54).
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-1) continues its weekend road trip in
Minnesota Saturday when it faces Hamline. The non-conference
matchup between the Warriors and Pipers is scheduled for 3 p.m. at
