CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Sophomore Kendra Thomas
(Jenison, Mich./Jenison) fired a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 win
over Polytechnic (N.Y.) to help Wisconsin Lutheran split a pair of
games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Tuesday.
The Warriors won their first game of the day over the Privateers
behind Thomas' impressive performance in the circle. The sophomore
right hander threw seven innings of three-hit softball while
striking out three and issuing four walks.
Thomas got into some trouble in the first inning as she found
herself in a bases-loaded, one-out situation, but worked out of it
by getting a lineout and a fly out to escape the early jam.
The WLC offense did all of its damage in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) started the
inning off with a single that was followed by a Jinny Curtis
(Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) bunt single. On the Curtis
single, Sievert advanced all the way to third putting runners on
the corners with no one out.
Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) then came
up and hit a ground ball and the Privateers tried getting the out
at home, but Sievert beat the tag putting the Warriors up 1-0.
Curtis would later score on a throwing error and Mantz scored on a
Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) groundout for a 3-0
WLC lead.
That would be all the runs Thomas would need as she was dominant
in the final six innings, allowing only multiple runners to reach
in the seventh inning when Polytechnic threatened with runners at
the corners and nobody out. Thomas then recorded a strikeout, got a
lineout to second and finished the game with groundball out to the
shortstop.
Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) was the lone
Warrior to finish with multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 to pace
Wisconsin Lutheran. Polytechnic had no player finish with multiple
hits.
Miranda Merelli took the loss for the Privateers (0-5), throwing
a complete game of her own as she struck out seven and allowed five
hits while giving up three runs.
In their second game, the Warriors faced off against Salem State
(Mass.). WLC trailed just 1-0 heading into the top of the fifth of
that game, but the Vikings put up four runs, all with two outs, to
go up 5-0 after five innings of play.
The Vikings got back-to-back home runs from Alyssa Bryan and
Jenn Toussaint in the fifth as well as an RBI single from Gabbie
Vitale.
After the Warriors shut down Salem State in the sixth inning,
the Vikings offense went back to work as they tallied six more runs
on six hits. Wisconsin Lutheran plated a run in the bottom of the
seventh when Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran)
drove in Rechlicz making the final score 11-1.
Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) had one of the
Warriors' five hits in game, the only extra-base hit for WLC as she
roped a double in the third inning. The Vikings, who finished with
14 hits, were led by Bryan, Toussaint and Lauren DiCredico as each
player collected two hits and two RBIs.
Nicole Wilson picked up the win for the Vikings (5-1) as she
threw a complete game giving up five hits and striking out four.
Thomas took the loss for WLC, allowing four earned runs in five
innings.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-2) will return to action tomorrow
afternoon when it plays two more games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate
Classic. The Warriors will meet Hamilton (N.Y.) at 1 p.m. and then
face off against Mitchell (Conn.) at 3 p.m. Both games will take
place at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
