FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College softball team dropped both of its games on Saturday at the
Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic as the Warriors concluded their
spring break trip with a 5-5 record.
In its first game of the day, WLC took on Wooster (Ohio) and
fell behind early as the Fighting Scots put up six runs in the top
of the first, highlighted by an inside-the-park grand slam from
Lauren Swinehart.
Wooster (6-3) took advantage of several WLC errors the rest of
the way and tacked on four more runs and WLC was unable muster a
comeback, dropping the first game 10-0.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) took the loss for the
Warriors as she allowed six hits and struck out one in five innings
of work. Jenn Horton threw all five innings for Wooster, allowing
five hits and striking out three as she was credited with the
victory.
In their second game, the Warriors took on Amherst (Mass.) and
suffered a 4-1 defeat. The Lord Jeffs pushed one run across in the
top of the first as Reilly Horan doubled in Donna Leet to give
Amherst an early edge. WLC responded, however, as Jenny Rechlicz
(West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) hit a 3-1 pitch over the left-center
field fence to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second
inning.
Amherst responded with a run in the fourth inning on a solo home
run of its own courtesy of Carolyn Miller to make the score 2-1.
The Lord Jeffs (2-0) tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and
seventh innings as they went onto the 4-1 victory.
Thomas tossed another complete game for Wisconsin Lutheran, her
eighth in six days, allowing just two earned runs and striking out
two in seven innings. Arielle Doering was the winning pitcher,
throwing a complete game as she struck out eight and allowed five
hits.
Rechlicz and Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
each tallied two hits to pace the Wisconsin Lutheran offense. Horan
finished with two hits to lead Amherst and was the only player with
a multi-hit performance.
Wisconsin Lutheran wrapped up its Florida spring break trip with
a 5-5 record and will return to the diamond next Saturday, March 24
for its home opener. WLC will host Northland (3-7) at Warrior Field
in a non-conference doubleheader with the first pitch of game one
scheduled for 12 p.m.
