MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team split a doubleheader with Northern Athletics
Conference opponent Maranatha on Saturday at Warrior Field, taking
the first game 9-1 before falling in the second game 5-1.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, Maranatha opened the
scoring in the first inning as Jana Dempsey drove in Autumn Peotter
on a fielder's choice. The Crusaders held onto the lead until the
third inning when the Warriors scored four runs of their own.
Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) singled
in the first two runs as Mindy Schalinske (Burlington,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and Emily Sievert (Mukwonago,
Wis./Mukwonago) scored. A Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney
Young) double scored the third run of the inning as Jinny Curtis
(Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) crossed the plate. The final run
of the inning came in when Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan
Hale) drove in Mantz.
After a scoreless top half of the inning, WLC added on three
more runs in the fourth. A RBI from Schalinske and two from Sievert
grew the lead to 7-1. The final two runs of the game came in the
fifth inning as Yudyli Salcedo (St. Paul, Minn./Johnson) and
Gacgacao crossed the plate to end the game in five innings,
9-1.
Schalinske and Gacgacao led the Warriors with two hits apiece,
while Sievert led the team with two RBI.
Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) earned her first
win of the season for the Warriors as she pitched all five innings
in the circle. She allowed three hits and one run, while striking
out one.
In game two of the afternoon, the Warriors took the early lead
when Mantz singled in Curtis in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
The lead would hold until the sixth inning when Maranatha (5-5, 1-3
NAC) plated five runs for a 5-1 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran was unable
to mount a comeback and fell by the same score.
Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) took the loss for Wisconsin
Lutheran. She went seven innings, allowing three earned runs on
four hits, while striking out six.
Rechlicz led the Warriors with three hits, while Sarah Conwell
(Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) and Mantz each had two
hits. Mantz added the only RBI for WLC.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-8, 1-1 NAC) returns to the diamond
tomorrow when it travels to the Stuart Sports Complex in Aurora
Ill. to take on the Aurora Spartans (5-9, 2-2 NAC). First pitch of
the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
