RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball
team concluded its eight-game road trip with two losses to
Concordia Chicago on Wednesday in a Northern Athletics Conference
doubleheader at the CUC Softball Field.
The Cougars got things rolling in the first inning of game one as
they plated a run when Cassie Slechta singled in Andrea Kelly
making the score 1-0 after one inning of play. CUC then added three
runs in the second and two more in the third. A Caitlin Richards
two-run home run in the second inning was the key hit for Concordia
Chicago over the two frames.
CUC then added a run each in the fourth and fifth as it won the
opener 8-0 in five innings. Olivia Hires hit a solo home run in the
bottom of the fourth inning.
Freshman Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) recorded the
only hit in game one for WLC when she roped a single to right
center in the fourth inning. Slechta was the top performer at the
plate for the Cougars going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run
scored.
Junior Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) took the loss for
Wisconsin Lutheran throwing four innings and striking out three
batters. Sami DeFord allowed one hit and struck out four in her
complete-game victory.
Game two again saw the host Cougars build a big lead early as they
plated four runs in each the first and second innings to quickly go
in front 8-0. Clarissa Gieske had two-RBI hits in both the first
two innings and was a big reason for CUC gaining the early
edge.
The Warriors plated their only run of the contest in the fourth
when sophomore Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
started the inning with a single and later scored on a Jenny
Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) sacrifice fly. CUC added
two more in the bottom of the fourth to gain the 10-1 game two
victory.
Curtis had the lone hit for WLC in game two, while Gacgacao and
Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) also reached
base via walks. Gieske and Jenni Jensen led Concordia Chicago as
they combined for five hits and eight RBI.
Sarah Dec tossed all five innings for CUC (8-18, 6-6 NAC) and
picked up the win while striking out two and allowing one run. Timm
took the loss for Wisconsin Lutheran as she tossed all four
innings.
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-15, 2-8 NAC) finally returns to Warrior Field
on Saturday when it hosts Marian (11-13, 6-4 NAC) in a NAC
doubleheader. First pitch between the Warriors and Sabres is set
for 12 p.m.
