MILWAUKEE - Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and Jenny
Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) each hit a walk-off homerun
to help lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team to a
Saturday sweep of Marian, 9-8 and 1-0, at Warrior Field.
Timm's homerun in game one capped off a remarkable comeback by WLC
as the Warriors trailed 8-4 with no runners on base facing their
final out. Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran)
started the rally with a single and Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago,
Ill./Whitney Young) was hit by a pitch giving WLC a pair of base
runners. Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) doubled in
Schalinske and Gacgacao making the score 8-6. Lauren Mantz (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) was then hit by another pitch
to set the stage for Timm.
The junior pitcher responded with the biggest hit of her collegiate
career smacking a pitch over the left center field fence and give
the Warriors a dramatic 9-8 victory.
The Warriors were trailing the entire contest in game one as Marian
built a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The visiting
Sabres scored their first four runs with just one hit and that was
a solo homerun off the bat of Emily Boehnlein in the fourth
inning.
WLC got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning by
scoring three runs on one play. That play was a Schalinske single
that got past the left fielder allowing Schalinske to sprint around
the bases. Also scoring on the play were Andria Wolske (Eau Claire,
Mich./Grace Christian) and Kelsi Daffner (Two Rivers,
Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran).
Marian (11-15, 6-6 NAC) quickly responded as it plated four runs in
the top of the sixth and appeared to be well on its way to victory
taking an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Wisconsin
Lutheran cut into the lead with a run when Curtis scored and
WLC trailed 8-4 heading into the seventh. That is when the Warriors
made their furious comeback and stole game one, 9-8.
Timm picked up her first victory of the season as she pitched one
and two thirds innings in relief of starting pitcher Jocelyn
Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale). Cherise Waltz took the loss
throwing a complete game and allowing five earned runs.
Schalinske led the way for WLC at the plate as the sophomore
leadoff hitter went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Curtis added
a 2-for-4 performance, scoring a pair of runs and driving in two.
Boehnlein finished as the top hitter for the Sabres going 2-for-4
with a homerun, double and two runs scored.
Game two ended the same way, but the first portion of the contest
was much different as both pitchers were dominant. Both Timm and
Waltz were hard to figure out as the score was tied 0-0 after seven
innings to setup extra innings. Timm and Waltz each posted zeroes
in the eighth and Timm shut down Marian in the top of the ninth
setting the stage for Rechlicz to continue the walk-off theme of
the afternoon.
Rechlicz came to the plate with two outs and nobody on base and
sent Waltz's offering over the leftfield fence allowing the
Warriors to walk-off with a Saturday afternoon sweep of Marian.
Both Timm and Waltz were impressive in the circle as Timm picked up
her second win of the day, tossing all nine innings and striking
out eight while allowing just two hits. Waltz suffered the loss
going eight and two thirds innings, allowing five hits and striking
out four.
Schalinske was the lone player to record multiple hits as the
outfielder went 2-for-4 to finish the doubleheader with five hits.
No Marian players finished with two hits as Timm kept the Sabres
off balance in game two.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-15, 4-8 NAC) will return to action tomorrow
afternoon when it hosts Edgewood (9-15, 2-8 NAC) in a doubleheader
at Warrior Field. First pitch between the Warriors and Eagles is
set for 12 p.m.
