MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin
Lutheran College softball team picked up a 4-1 win in game one of a
Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader with Alverno as the
Warriors split the two games on Sunday at Alverno Field. The
Inferno overcame a five-run deficit in game two to win 6-5.
After both teams went scoreless in the first inning of game one,
WLC came out strong in the top of the second and plated a pair of
runs to take the early lead. Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis,
Wis./Nathan Hale) and Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago)
both recorded hits and scored the Warriors two runs during the
two-run second. Alverno answered with a run in the bottom of the
frame to make the score 2-1 after two complete.
That score would remain until the top of the sixth when WLC added
some big insurance runs as it plated two more. Jocelyn Bykowski
(Greendale, Wis./Greendale) drove in Lauren Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) for the first run of the inning and
Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) hit a sacrifice fly
that scored Sievert as the Warriors picked up the game one victory,
4-1.
Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) picked up the win in the
circle for WLC as the junior threw a complete game and scattered
six hits. Timm allowed just one earned run and struck out three.
Erin Dulek took the loss for the Inferno despite giving up no
earned runs. Dulek fanned eight in the loss.
Gacgacao and Sievert led the Wisconsin Lutheran offense as both
players recorded two hits. Sievert also scored twice and had the
games' only extra-base hit with a double in the second. Dulek went
2-for-2 to lead Alverno at the plate.
The Warriors looked poised for a sweep early in game two as they
scored five runs in the top of the second for a 5-0 lead. WLC roped
six hits in the inning, including a two-RBI single from Gacgacao.
Bykowski, Mantz and Rechlicz each added RBI singles in the inning
to help Wisconsin Lutheran gain the five-run advantage.
That would be all the scoring for the Warriors the rest of the way,
however, as Alverno started chipping away at the lead. The Inferno
scored twice each in the fourth and sixth innings making the score
5-4 heading into the seventh.
WLC retired the first batter in the bottom of the seventh and
recorded a fielder's choice two batters later as Alverno had a
runner on first and was down to its final out. A walk and hit
batter loaded the bases and Erika Wotnoske hit a walk off two-RBI
single to give the Inferno the twinbill split.
Gacgacao paced the Warriors offense as she had another multi-hit
game, going 2-for-4 driving in two and scoring a run of her own.
Wotnoske and Inferno starting pitcher Jamie Villalobos each had
three hits to lead Alverno (14-18, 7-11 NAC).
Villalobos picked up the win as she recorded the complete game
and allowed one earned run with four strikeouts. Timm was charged
with the loss after allowing three earned in six and two-thirds
innings pitched.
Wisconsin Lutheran (11-19, 5-11 NAC) will return to the diamond on
Tuesday when it hosts Edgewood (10-20, 3-13 NAC) in a NAC twinbill.
First pitch between the Warriors and Eagles is set for 3 p.m. The
games mark the beginning of an eight-game homestand for WLC.
