MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin
Lutheran College softball team was swept by Edgewood in a Northern
Athletics Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Warrior Field. The
Eagles won game one, 10-0 and followed that with a slim 8-7 triumph
in game two.
The opener was all Edgewood as after the visitors led 1-0 heading
into the third inning, the Eagles plated five runs in the third,
all after two outs, to take a 6-0 advantage. EC then scored four
runs in the sixth inning and won 10-0 via the 10-run rule.
Wisconsin Lutheran could not muster up much offense off of Edgewood
starter Charlie Leikness as the sophomore allowed just two hits in
six innings to pick up the win. Katie Timm (Franklin,
Wis./Franklin) took the loss for the Warriors, giving up seven
earned runs in six innings.
Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) reached base twice
for Wisconsin Lutheran as she had one of the two Warriors hits and
also reached on a walk in her other at-bat. The other hit for WLC
came off the bat of Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale).
EC was led by Alyssa Schulting who went 3-for-4 and Carlene
DeCoster added two hits and scored twice.
The second game was a back-and-forth affair as WLC struck first by
scoring a run in the bottom of the first when Timm singled in Dayan
Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young). Edgewood answered with a
run in the top of the second, but the Warriors went right back on
top when Kelsi Daffner (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) hit an
RBI double in the second that scored Rechlicz to give Wisconsin
Lutheran a 2-1 edge.
Wisconsin Lutheran extended its lead to three in the third as
Bykowski and Rechlicz each recorded RBIs that plated Emily Sievert
(Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and Jinny Curtis (Muskego,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) as the Warriors led 4-1 after three
innings.
Edgewood would cut the WLC lead to one at 4-3 after plating two in
the top of the fourth, but Wisconsin Lutheran answered with a pair
of its own to go back up three, 6-3 after four complete. Curtis had
the big hit in the fourth inning as she roped a two-RBI single
scoring Sievert and Sarah Conwell (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Kenosha
Tremper).
The visiting Eagles scored one in the fifth making the scoreboard
read 6-4 in favor of WLC after five innings. That would be the last
lead of the game for WLC as Edgewood plated four runs in the sixth,
all with two outs, to jump in front 8-6. The Eagles loaded the
bases without a hit and then received a huge two-out,
bases-clearing double from Emily Monson to go up 7-4. Monson would
later score on a single.
Wisconsin Lutheran responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth
as Daffner led off the frame with a walk and later scored on an RBI
groundout from Gacgacao. That would be all the scoring as the
Warriors were retired in order in the seventh allowing Edgewood to
escape with the 8-7 win in the nightcap.
The Warriors bats woke up in game two as they totaled nine hits and
were led by Sievert, Curtis and Rechlicz who each tallied two hits.
Curtis drove in two and Sievert led the home team with two runs
scored. Monson was the only Eagle with two hits as she went 2-for-3
with three RBI.
Leikness got the win for the Eagles (12-20, 5-13 NAC) as she
pitched four innings of two-hit ball in relief. Bykowski was
charged with the loss after throwing the first five and two-thirds
innings and striking out two.
Wisconsin Lutheran (11-21, 5-13 NAC) returns to the diamond
tomorrow when it continues its eight-game homestand by hosting
Lakeland (17-13, 12-6 NAC) in a NAC doubleheader. First pitch
between the Warriors and Muskies is set for 3 p.m. at Warrior
Field.
