MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team dropped two games of a Northern Athletics Conference
doubleheader to Lakeland on Thursday at Warrior Field. WLC fell 4-0
in the opener and 11-2 in five innings in the nightcap.
Lakeland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning
of the opener led by Chelsea Gile's two RBI. LC tacked on another
run in the top of the third to push its lead to 4-0. WLC had
chances to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth and
seventh innings, but couldn't come through as it left two runners
on base in each frame.
Junior starting pitcher Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin)
took the loss for WLC, giving up three earned runs in seven innings
while striking out five. Sophomores Mindy Schalinske (Burlington,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale,
Wis./Greendale) each had two hits for the Warriors. Both teams
finished with seven hits in the contest.
Erin Henk earned the shutout win for the Muskies, giving up
seven hits in seven innings. Gile went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while
Jenny LaLuzerne went 2-for-4 and scored twice.
In game two, the Muskies started with a steady offensive
showing, scoring all 11 of their runs through the first four
innings.
The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth
for two runs. Sophomore Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago)
drove in sophomore Kelsi Daffner (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc
Lutheran) to score the Warriors first run of the day. Sievert later
came around to score on an RBI single by Timm.
Bykowski took the loss for the Warriors, allowing eight earned
runs in five innings. Sievert led the Warriors offensively, going
2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored. Timm also went 1-for-3 with
an RBI.
Henk picked up her second win of the day in the circle, letting
in just two earned runs in five innings. Heather Haeflinger went
3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored for Lakeland (19-13,
14-6 NAC). Kaitlyn Hoffmann added two RBI and two runs scored on
2-for-3 at the plate.
The Warriors (11-23, 5-15 NAC) return to action on Friday with a
doubleheader against conference opponent MSOE (6-26, 5-15 NAC) at
Warrior Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
