ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team pounded out 14 hits and 13 runs in game two of its
Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader with Rockford on Tuesday
to salvage a split with the host Regents. WLC fell in the opener
5-2 before winning the second contest 13-3 in six innings.
In the game two victory, WLC got rolling early as it plated
three runs in both the first and second innings to build a 6-1 lead
after the first two frames. The first inning saw the Warriors lace
four base hits, including RBIs from Emily Sievert (Mukwonago,
Wis./Mukwonago), Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) and Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale).
In the second inning, Wisconsin Lutheran added on three more
runs as it was aided by a couple Regents errors for the 6-1 lead.
Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) roped an RBI single
in the inning to help WLC expand its early lead.
Wisconsin Lutheran went scoreless in the third before plating
one more in the fourth, followed by two runs in the fifth
highlighted by a two-RBI double from Katie Timm (Franklin,
Wis./Franklin). WLC then broke the game open in the top of the
sixth inning with four runs as Timm and Mantz added to their RBI
totals in the frame. Kelsi Daffner (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc
Lutheran) also added a sacrifice fly helping the Warriors to the
game two 13-3 victory.
Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) and Rechlicz led
the 14-hit attack as each player tallied three hits while Gacgacao
also scored three runs. Timm added a pair of hits and led WLC with
three RBI, while Mantz and Daffner also recorded multi-hit
games.
Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) picked up the win
for Wisconsin Lutheran in the circle as the sophomore threw all six
innings allowing two earned runs and striking out three. Jennifer
Zulkanycz took the loss throwing five innings and allowing just two
earned runs. Rockford was led by Maranda Walker at the plate as she
went 4-for-4.
In the opener, the Regents (7-13, 2-4 NAC) scored two runs in
the second and three in the fifth as they took game one from the
Warriors, 5-2.
Leadoff batter Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland
Lutheran) was the top player for Wisconsin Lutheran in game one as
the sophomore was a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish while also scoring
a run. Mantz recorded another two-hit performance, while Sievert
and Daffner drove in the two Warriors runs.
Sarah Moritz got the win for Rockford throwing five innings and
allowing just one run. Timm was credited with the loss despite
allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work. Timm also
finished with four strikeouts in game one of the twinbill.
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-9, 2-2 NAC) returns to action on Friday as
it continues a long road swing with a conference doubleheader at
Benedictine (9-7, 5-1 NAC). First pitch at the Lisle-Benedictine
Sports Complex is set for 11 a.m.
