LISLE, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team was swept in its Northern Athletics Conference
doubleheader on Friday afternoon against conference preseason
favorite Benedictine at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex. WLC
fell in game one, 2-0 before dropping the second game 10-0 in five
innings.
Game one of the doubleheader featured a pitching duel between
the Warriors' Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and the Eagles'
Brittany Adcox. Unfortunately for Wisconsin Lutheran, Adcox came
out with the upper hand as she tossed a one-hitter, while retiring
17 straight batters from the first through the sixth inning to help
lead the Eagles to a 2-0 victory.
Timm gave up one run in the top of the first as Eagles leadoff
hitter Kelly Mieszala doubled and then scored after a pair of
groundouts to make the score 1-0 after one frame.
That would be all the scoring the Eagles would get off Timm
until the sixth when they manufactured another run, making the
score 2-0 as the junior threw six innings allowing nine hits and
giving up two runs. Adcox got the win with the complete game as she
struck out eight. Both pitchers were aided by solid defense as
neither team committed an error in the contest.
Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) was the
only Warrior to reach base as the leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch
in the first inning and recorded the only WLC hit with a triple in
the sixth. Brittany Wolski of Benedictine finished as the only
player with two hits as she went 2-for-3.
In the second contest, it was a big first inning by the host
Eagles that proved to be too much for WLC as Benedictine took game
two, 10-0. The Eagles plated six runs in the first inning as
Chelsea White had the big hit, a two-out, two-RBI single to take a
commanding lead after one inning.
Benedictine would tack on three more runs in the second and
added one more in the third en route to the 10-0 victory.
Eryn Pondo kept the strong pitching theme of the day going for
Benedictine (12-8, 7-1 NAC) as she tossed a five-inning perfect
game striking out five to lead BenU in game two. Jocelyn Bykwoski
(Greendale, Wis./Greendale) took the loss pitching one-plus inning.
Timm relieved her and gave up no earned runs in three innings.
Wolski and Adcox paced the Eagles offense as each player tallied
two hits and scored two runs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-11, 2-4 NAC) returns to the diamond on
Monday when it continues its current eight-game road swing with a
doubleheader against Aurora (7-9, 4-2 NAC). First pitch at Jericho
Park in Aurora, Ill. is set for 3 p.m.
