AURORA, Ill. - The
Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team was swept in a Northern
Athletics Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon against
Aurora at Jericho Park. The Spartans won game one 8-0 in six
innings and followed up by downing WLC 11-2 in five innings of game
two.
In game one, Aurora tallied one run in the first and two each in
the second and third as the home team took a 5-0 lead after three
complete. The Spartans then concluded the contest with three runs
in the bottom of the sixth as a two-RBI single from Jackie Soch
ended the game in six innings.
The Warriors tallied just three hits in game one as Jinny Curtis
(Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), Lauren Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), and Andria Wolske (Eau Claire,
Mich./Grace Christian) each recorded hits. Aurora was led by Soch
who went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Natalie Zanella picked up the game one win for Aurora, tossing a
complete game as she struck out three and allowed just three hits.
Katie Timm (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) took the loss in the circle
for the Warriors, giving up four earned runs in 5 and 1/3 innings
pitched.
Game two saw Wisconsin Lutheran strike first as the Warriors plated
two runs in the top of the second inning. Kelsi Daffner (Two
Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) tripled home Timm for the
Warriors' first run and Wolske singled in Daffner to put Wisconsin
Lutheran up 2-0.
Aurora quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of inning
number two and then exploded for seven runs in the third inning to
take a commanding 10-2 lead. AU tacked one more on in the fourth as
it picked up the 11-2 win.
Errors hurt the Warriors in game two as Timm suffered the loss
despite giving up just one earned run in three innings. Five WLC
errors led to nine unearned Spartans runs. Ashley Kellenberg got
the win for AU, pitching the first four innings and allowing three
hits.
Curtis had the other of Wisconsin Lutheran's three hits besides the
hits from Daffner and Wolske in the second inning. Caitlyn Clay
went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs to lead Aurora (10-10, 6-2
NAC).
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-13, 2-6 NAC) concludes an eight-game road
trip on Wednesday afternoon when it visits Concordia Chicago (6-18,
4-6 NAC) in a conference doubleheader. First pitch between the
Warriors and Cougars is set for 3 p.m. at the CUC Softball Field in
River Forest, Ill.
