MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team came up just short against Marian 1-0 in a Northern Athletics Conference contest Thursday night at Warrior Field.

The Warriors and Sabres played evenly throughout the opening 20 minutes of the first half until the visitors netted the game's only score at 21:11. Brittany Syms was credited with the netter of an assist from Kylie McArthur. Both teams played scoreless soccer for the remainder of the half. Wisconsin Lutheran finished the opening frame with four shots, compared to seven for Marian.

WLC tightened up its defense in the second half and limited the Sabres to just four shot attempts. The Warriors, who finished with five second-half shots, had several close chances late in the half, but were stopped short of the game-tying score. The Sabres edged the Warriors in shots for the game, 11-9.

Junior Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) and sophomore Maggie Gartner (Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber) each recorded two shots to lead the WLC attack. Warriors sophomore goalkeeper Kate Gucinski (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) stopped six shots in net.

Laura Maly registered a team-high four shots for the Sabres (2-3-0, 2-1-0 NAC), while goalkeeper Caitlyn Rosenberger collected four saves to earn the victory.

Wisconsin Lutheran (1-4-1, 0-3-0 NAC) will wrap up its season-opening seven-game homestand Saturday when it hosts Buena Vista (5-0-1) in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest at Warrior Field.
