MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's soccer team came up just short against Marian 1-0 in a
Northern Athletics Conference contest Thursday night at Warrior
Field.
The Warriors and Sabres played evenly throughout the opening 20
minutes of the first half until the visitors netted the game's only
score at 21:11. Brittany Syms was credited with the netter of an
assist from Kylie McArthur. Both teams played scoreless soccer for
the remainder of the half. Wisconsin Lutheran finished the opening
frame with four shots, compared to seven for Marian.
WLC tightened up its defense in the second half and limited the
Sabres to just four shot attempts. The Warriors, who finished with
five second-half shots, had several close chances late in the half,
but were stopped short of the game-tying score. The Sabres edged
the Warriors in shots for the game, 11-9.
Junior Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) and sophomore Maggie
Gartner (Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber) each recorded two shots to lead
the WLC attack. Warriors sophomore goalkeeper Kate Gucinski
(Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) stopped six shots in net.
Laura Maly registered a team-high four shots for the Sabres
(2-3-0, 2-1-0 NAC), while goalkeeper Caitlyn Rosenberger collected
four saves to earn the victory.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-4-1, 0-3-0 NAC) will wrap up its
season-opening seven-game homestand Saturday when it hosts Buena
Vista (5-0-1) in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest at Warrior
Field.
