CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team split a pair of games Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Classic, falling to Olivet (Mich.) 8-1 and defeating Salem St. (Mass.) 10-4.

In game two against Salem St., WLC jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after a Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) RBI single brought home Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) in the first inning. Salem St. didn't waste any time responding, scoring three runs of its own in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.

Following three scoreless innings, the Warriors took back those three runs in the fifth. Shellberg crossed home on a Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) RBI single to regain the lead at 4-3. The Vikings had yet another answer in the bottom half of the inning, tying the contest at 4-4.

In the sixth, the first three Warriors reached base to set up a Gacgacao bases-clearing three-run double that plated Schalinske, Abby Wichgers (Muskego, Wis./Muskego), and Alex Hackel (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran). WLC scored two more times in the inning to take a commanding 9-4 advantage. Curtis doubled home Schalinske in the seventh to put the final tally at 10-4.
