CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College softball team split a pair of games Wednesday at the Gene
Cusic Classic, falling to Olivet (Mich.) 8-1 and defeating Salem
St. (Mass.) 10-4.
In game two against Salem St., WLC jumped out to a quick 1-0
lead after a Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) RBI
single brought home Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland
Lutheran) in the first inning. Salem St. didn't waste any time
responding, scoring three runs of its own in the bottom of the
first to take a 3-1 lead.
Following three scoreless innings, the Warriors took back those
three runs in the fifth. Bekah Shellberg (Burlington, Wis./Catholic
Central) reached on an error that allowed Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago,
Ill./Whitney Young) and Schalinske to score and tie the game.
Shellberg crossed home on a Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) RBI single to regain the lead at 4-3. The Vikings
had yet another answer in the bottom half of the inning, tying the
contest at 4-4.
In the sixth, the first three Warriors reached base to set up a
Gacgacao bases-clearing three-run double that plated Schalinske,
Abby Wichgers (Muskego, Wis./Muskego), and Alex Hackel (Crete,
Ill./Illinois Lutheran). WLC scored two more times in the inning to
take a commanding 9-4 advantage. Curtis doubled home Schalinske in
the seventh to put the final tally at 10-4.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) notched the win for WLC,
throwing all 7.0 innings, giving up three earned runs and fanning
nine, including five of the last six batters to end the game.
Gacgacao was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, Curtis added a
2-for-4 performance with two RBI and a run scored, while Schalinske
finished 1-for-2 with four runs scored.
Brittney Howe allowed seven earned runs on nine hits in 7.0
innings to take the loss for the Vikings (5-3). Alyssa Bryan went
2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
In game one, Olivet jumped on Wisconsin Lutheran in the bottom
of the first, storming out to a 5-0 lead highlighted by Lauren
Lendard's two-run double.
Gacgacao scored the Warriors' lone run of the game in the third,
coming around on Schalinske's single. Olivet scored three more
times in the sixth to put the final score at 8-1.
Shellberg took the loss for WLC, allowing seven runs in 6.0
innings. Schalinske was 1-for-2 with one RBI, while Curtis finished
a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish.
Jessica Duell was strong in the circle to earn the win for the
Comets (6-5), not allowing any earned runs over 7.0 innings of
work. Marlene Packer led Olivet offensively, going 3-for-4 with two
RBIs and two runs scored.
The Warriors (3-3) will enjoy an off day Thursday before
returning to action with two more games in Fort Myers Friday at the
Lee County Sports Complex. Game one is set for 11 a.m. against
North Park (Ill.), while game two will start at 1 p.m. against St.
Joseph's-Brooklyn (N.Y.).
