FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College softball team split a pair of games Friday at the Gene
Cusic Collegiate Classic, falling 3-0 to North Park (Ill.) before
defeating St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (N.Y.) 8-0 in five innings.
In game two, WLC jumped on St. Joseph's early, racing out to a
3-0 lead after the first inning. Jinny Curtis (Muskego,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) sent home Mindy Schalinske (Burlington,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) with a double to get the scoring started.
Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) drew a bases-loaded
walk that brought home Curtis, and Bekah Shellberg (Burlington,
Wis./Catholic Central) capped the inning off coming around to score
after Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
reached safely on a fielder's choice.
In the fourth, WLC pounded out eight hits to push five more runs
across the plate, bringing its lead up to 8-0 which stood after
five innings.
Shellberg picked up the win, striking out five and allowing just
two hits over 5.0 innings for the shutout. Curtis finished 2-for-3
with two RBIs and two runs, while Mantz also contributed two RBIs
by finishing 1-for-3 at the plate.
Jackie Perillo took the loss, surrendering three earned runs and
five walks in just one inning. Mabel Vargas and Megan Moran had the
only two hits for St. Joseph's (1-3).
Earlier in game one, North Park did all the damage it needed in
the fourth, scoring twice for a 2-0 lead. The Vikings added one
more run in the fifth for the eventual 3-0 final score.
WLC attempted to mount a comeback, totaling four hits but left
three runners on base over the final two innings, unable to push
any runs across the plate.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) suffered the loss,
letting in two earned runs in 6.0 innings on six hits while
striking out three. Schalinske, Rechlicz, Alex Hackel (Crete,
Ill./Illinois Lutheran), and Abby Wichgers (Muskego, Wis./Muskego)
each registered hits for WLC.
Danielle Warner was the victor in the circle for North Park
(8-2), blanking the Warriors and allowing just four hits in 7.0
innings. Casey Latal went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
WLC (4-4) wraps up its Florida trip tomorrow with two games at
the Cape Coral Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Fla. The Warriors face
Nichols (Mass.) at 9 a.m. and Brockport (N.Y.) at 11 a.m.
