MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader Monday
afternoon against two-time defending conference tournament champion
Benedictine University by scores of 7-1 and 14-5 at Warrior
Field.
After keeping the Eagles' bats silent for the first two innings
of the opener, the Warriors gave up three runs in the third, two in
the fourth, and the final two in the seventh inning.
Sophomore Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) smacked
an RBI triple to center in the third inning that allowed freshman
Abby Wichgers (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) to cross the plate to account
for the Warriors' lone run of the game. Gacgacao, Wichgers, and
freshman Libby Larsen (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) each had one hit to
lead WLC at the dish for the game.
Junior Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was handed her
fourth loss of the season from the circle. She tossed 6.0 innings,
gave up five runs, and fanned five BenU batters.
Melissa Guzior picked up her eighth win of the season for the
Eagles as she hurled a complete game. Guzior fanned six batters on
her way giving up just one run on three hits. Kelly Mieszala went
3-for-3 with two runs scored for BenU.
Benedictine continued its hot hitting throughout the nightcap as
it plated 14 runs on 13 hits. The Eagles carried a 6-1 lead into
the seventh inning until they exploded for eight runs.
WLC didn't go away, however, as it scored four times in the last of
the seventh on an RBI double from junior Jinny Curtis (Muskego,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and a Larsen three-run homerun.
Curtis, Gacgacao and freshmen Tara Degl'Innocenti (Lisle,
Ill./Naperville North) led the Warriors with two hits apiece.
Thomas took her fifth loss of the season after going 6.0 innings,
allowing five runs on nine hits.
Kelly Loy (6-2) grabbed her sixth win of the season as she went
6.2 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. Loy also struck out
three. Erin Kotlarz went 4-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored
to lead the Eagles in the nightcap.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-9, 3-5 NAC) will next travel to Marian
University (5-15, 3-5 NAC) on Wednesday, April 17 for two NAC games
against the Sabres. First pitch from Smith Fields in Fond du Lac,
