MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team dropped two Northern Athletics Conference games in a
doubleheader against Dominican University on Saturday at Warrior
Field. WLC dropped the opener, 3-0, before a 6-2 defeat in game
two.
In game one, Dominican scored all the runs it needed in the top
of the third. Erica King drove in two runs in the inning for a 2-0
lead. Starting pitcher Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison)
limited the damage by stranding two runners on base. Dominican was
able to tack on another run in the sixth for a 3-0 advantage.
The Warriors wouldn't go down without a fight, however. Two WLC
players reached base in the bottom of the sixth, but they were
unable to score. In the seventh, the Warriors loaded the bases with
no outs, but once again their rally was thwarted in an attempt to
plate a run.
Thomas took the loss, allowing three earned runs over 7.0
innings while striking out four. Mindy Schalinske (Burlington,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran), Tara Degl'Innocenti (Lisle,
Ill./Naperville North), Libby Larsen (Menasha, Wis./Menasha), and
Thomas each tallied one hit for WLC.
Emily Mahoney struck out 11 batters over 6.0 innings to record
the victory for the Stars. King went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead
Dominican (20-8, 12-2 NAC).
In game two, Dominican struck in the top of the third again,
gaining an early 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Andrea Pinarski cleared
the bases with a three-run double to push the Stars' lead to
4-0.
The Warriors got their first runs of the day in the bottom of
the sixth when Degl'Innocenti smacked a two-run homerun to left
field to cut their deficit in half at 4-2. Dominican answered back
with two runs in the seventh to push its lead back to four runs.
WLC had a seventh-inning rally snuffed out again, leaving two
runners on base when the game ended.
Thomas allowed five earned runs over 7.0 innings to suffer the
loss. Degl'Innocenti finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run
scored. Schalinske and Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) each had two hits for the Warriors.
Mahoney picked up her second win of the day, not allowing a run
in 5.0 innings and striking out six. Pinarski was 1-for-4 with
three RBIs. Melissa Summaria also went 3-for-3 with two runs
scored.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-11, 3-7 NAC) aims to get back to .500
overall tomorrow afternoon with a Senior Day doubleheader against
Alverno College (12-10, 4-8 NAC). First pitch from Warrior Field is
scheduled for 12 p.m.
