Box Score 2 VERONA, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team split a doubleheader against Edgewood College on Monday at Ceniti Park, falling in game one, 5-1, before prevailing in game two, 4-3.
In game two, WLC jumped out to an early lead after scoring three times in the top of the first.Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) got the first run across, coming home on a wild pitch. Jenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) then singled homeDayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) to push the lead to 2-0. Tara Degl'Innocenti (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) added the third run, scoring on Kendra Thomas' (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the first, Edgewood responded with a single run to cut its deficit to 3-1. In the second, the Warriors got that run back after Abby Wichgers (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) scored on another wild pitch.
The Eagles again had an answer in the second, pushing two runs across to make the score 4-3. The game became a pitcher's dual the rest of the way as neither team was able to plate any runs and the Warriors held on to salvage the conference split.
Thomas picked up the win, striking out five over 7.0 innings and allowing just one earned run.Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) tallied two hits, while Rechlicz and Thomas each had an RBI.
Charlie Liekness took the loss, pitching 0.1 innings but was charged with two earned runs. Alyssa Schulting went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Dylan Bahrke went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
In game one, Edgewood scored twice in the top of the first for an early 2-0 lead. EC then tacked on three more runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 5-0.
The Warriors got their first run of the game across in the sixth when Schalinske scored on a throw during a Curtis groundout. WLC wasn't able to plate anything else and fell 5-1.
Thomas struck out eight batters in 6.0 innings, but took the loss after allowing four earned runs. Schalinske and Gacgacao had the only two hits for the Warriors.
Rachel DeJongh earned the win, allowing just two hits without an earned run. Carlene DeCoster finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
WLC (12-12, 6-8 NAC) travels to Sheboygan, Wis., on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Lakeland College (11-15, 7-6 NAC). First pitch from the Lakeland Softball Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
