Warriors, Sabres Split Regular Season Finale

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team concluded its regular season on Monday, splitting a doubleheader against Marian University at Smith Fields. WLC won game one, 7-5, in eight innings before falling 10-2 in five innings of the nightcap. With the game one victory, the Warriors tied a program record with 19 wins.

In game one, Marian struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. In the top of the third, Tara Degl'Innocenti (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) doubled home two runs as part of a three-run inning that gave the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

Marian again scored once in the bottom of the third, but WLC got the run back in the top of the fifth when Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) came home on a steal attempt byJenny Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale). In the sixth inning, Marian pushed two runs across to tie the game at 4-4.

With the game in extra innings, WLC came around to score three times in the top of the eighth, highlighted by Dayan Gacgacao's (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) two-run single. Marian plated one run across in its half of the inning, but the Sabres could get no closer as the Warriors prevailed 7-5.

Libby Larsen (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) pitched 3.0 innings of relief to pick up the win and even her record at 2-2. Degl'Innocenti finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Gacgacao drove in two runs on 3-for-4 hitting.

Emily Gorges took the loss, surrendering 13 WLC hits resulting in four earned runs. Nikki Jakel finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

Marian struck early and often in game two, scoring six runs over the first two innings for a quick 6-1 advantage. WLC was able to get on the board in the top of the second on an Abby Wichgers (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) single the plated Degl'Innocenti.

In the third inning, Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) drew a walk to get on base and later scored on a throwing error during Lauren Mantz's (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) at-bat.

The Sabres scored three more times in the fourth inning to push their lead to 9-2, and were able to score once more in the fifth to end the game at 10-2.

Larsen was tagged with the defeat, allowing three earned runs in 1.0 inning. Degl'Innocenti scored once on 1-for-2 hitting and Wichgers finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Gorges struck out six over 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run for Marian (11-25, 9-15 NAC). At the plate, she finished 2-for-3, driving in three runs and scoring twice.

The sixth-seeded Warriors (19-17, 13-11 NAC) face third-seeded Dominican University (27-11, 19-5 NAC) in the first game of the 2013 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament on Thursday at Alverno Field in Milwaukee. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. The Stars narrowly swept both games of a doubleheader from WLC in their April 20 meeting, winning 3-0 and 6-2.
