Warriors Shutout Cougars, Split Second Straight Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team split its second doubleheader in as many days Sunday afternoon at CUC Softball Field, blanking Concordia Chicago 9-0 in the opener before falling 4-3 in game two.

The Warriors reached the scoring column rather quickly as Jinny Curtis' (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) groundout scored Brittney Blazich (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) from third in the first inning. WLC added two more runs in the second when Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) and Blazich tallied RBI singles for a 3-0 lead after 2.0 innings. In the third, Alicia Barbian (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) homered to left to give the Warriors a 4-0 cushion.

Following three scoreless frames, the Warriors added several insurance runs to their total as they scored five times in the seventh. Barbian, Tara Degl'Innocenti (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North), and Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) each recorded run-scoring hits in the inning.

Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) won her 12th game of the season in the circle as she gave up just five hits over 7.0 innings without allowing a run. She also struckout five. Barbian, Gacgacao, and Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) each had two hits in the game.

Alicia Salata led the Cougars at the plate by going 2-for-3. Meghan Johnson allowed nine runs, just four earned, over 7.0 innings to suffer the loss for CUC.

The Warriors plated an unearned run in the first inning of game two on another RBI groundout from Barbian. WLC however had a tough time mustering any offense as it was held without a hit until the fifth inning. CUC accounted for all four of its runs by scoring twice in both the second and third innings for a 4-1 lead.

The game remained 4-1 in favor of the Cougars until there were two outs in the seventh when Blazich tripled home Gacgacao and then scored on a throwing error to bring the Warriors within a run. CUC starting pitcher Alicia Salata retired the next Warriors batter to end any scoring threat and thus the game.

The Warriors were held to just four hits in the game, coming off the bats of four different players. Thomas took the loss as she threw 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. She did not strikeout or walk a batter.

Meghan Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Concordia Chicago (6-12, 3-5 NACC). Salata allowed just one earned run on four hits in 7.0 innings in the circle to earn the win.

WLC (13-9, 5-3 NACC) travels to conference rival Concordia Wisconsin (12-10, 6-2 NACC) Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Links to live stats will be available on wlcsports.com.
