Softball Earns Split With Eagles On The Road

LISLE, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) tossed a complete game shutout in the opener as the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team split with the Benedictine Eagles Saturday at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex. The Warriors held on for a slim 1-0 victory in game one, before falling 8-4 in the second game of the day.

  • The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in the first as Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) led off the game with a single, then stole second base. Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) ripped a single up the middle to score Wilson, giving WLC a 1-0 lead after one inning.
  • WLC threatened again in the second with three hits, but was unable to add any runs.
  • Benedictine put a runner on base in the third inning, but Mahsem induced a strikeout and a fly out to escape any damage.
  • The Eagles led off the fifth inning with a double to left field and advanced the runner to third with a deep fly ball to center field, but Mahsem escaped another jam after two straight pop outs, preserving the 1-0 lead for Wisconsin Lutheran.
  • With two outs in the seventh, Benedictine put a runner on second base after a double to right field, but a groundout to Wilson at shortstop ended the threat, giving the Warriors the 1-0 win in the opener.
  • Wilson led WLC with a 3-for-3 performance in the leadoff spot, while Ritacco drove in the lone run of the game with a single.
  • Mahsem earned the win in the circle, allowing just five hits over 7.0 scoreless innings for her 10th victory of the season. She extended her scoreless innings streak to 37.1 innings,

  • Once again, the Warriors struck first in the top of the first inning when Wilson walked to lead off the game, then swiped second base.
  • Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) bunted Wilson to third, then Ritacco delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Wilson, giving WLC a 1-0 advantage.
  • Benedictine answered in its bottom half of the first with an RBI single after a walk to tie the contest at 1-1.
  • The Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the third inning after a two-run home run from Taylor Skraba, then added three more runs in the fourth after four hits and one error.
  • WLC answered back in the fifth after loading the bases with two straight singles and a walk, then Moberg reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.).
  • Ritacco followed with an RBI single that scored Wilson, cutting the BenU lead to three runs after five innings.
  • Ropas brought Wisconsin Lutheran within two in the sixth with an RBI single to right center, scoring Jules Morini (Chicago, Ill.), who singled earlier in the inning.
  • The Eagles added two insurance runs in the sixth after two base hits and an error from the Warriors. WLC was unable to mount a comeback in the seventh, falling 8-4.
  • Ropas led the Warriors with two hits, while Ritacco drove in two runs.
  • Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs over 6.0 innings

  • Megan Fast earned the win in game two, allowing four runs over 7.0 innings.

  • The Warriors return home tomorrow when they host Lakeland for just their second home doubleheader of the season. The Muskies (11-13, 4-4 NACC) split with Dominican Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
