Warriors' NACC Tournament Run Halted By Spartans

MONTGOMERY, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team saw its run through the 2019 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament come to an end Friday on the second day of the tournament. The sixth-seeded Warriors were defeated by third-seeded and host Aurora, 9-2, in a second elimination game at Bedrosian Stadium.

  • The Warriors jumped in front early with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Ileana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) singled up the middle to plate Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) before Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead.
  • The Spartans answered with a run in their half of the first on a pair of two-out hits to cut WLC's lead to 2-1.
  • After a pair of two-out walks and wild pitches in the second, Nina Tholl drove in a pair of runs on a double to put AU on top, 3-2.
  • For the second consecutive inning, Aurora scored two runs, highlighted by a solo blast from Sam Owens, to push its advantage to 5-2.
  • AU broke the game open in the fourth as the hosts scored three runs on five hits to take an 8-2 lead.
  • The Spartans added a single tally in the sixth to push their lead to 9-2 heading into the final frame.
  • Davina Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.) roped a two-out double to deep left center in the sixth inning for the Warriors' first hit since the opening frame.
  • Wilson, Gutierrez, Fierro, and Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) each recorded a hit for WLC.
  • Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three runs with three walks in 1.2 innings of work.

  • Aurora pounded out 15 hits, including three each from Josie Bachtell and Brianna Lewis, en route to the tournament victory. Hannah Tomasko earned the win on the rubber for AU as she allowed two runs on four hits in a complete game effort. The Spartans advance to another elimination game Saturday against fourth=seeded Marian.

 

  • The Warriors finished their 2019 season 23-17 overall and 11-11 in the NACC. The 23 wins are the second-most in program history, while WLC won two conference tournament games for the first time.
