Warriors Split Second Day Of The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Behind a three-RBI game from sophomore Jules Morini (Chicago, Ill.), the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team earned a 5-2 victory over Penn St.-Berks on Tuesday morning. The Warriors dropped their second game of the day to Cornell at the Hancock Recreational Complex in Clermont, Florida.

  • The Nittany Lions struck first in the opening inning, scoring on a single down the left field line to take a 1-0 lead. Warriors senior Davina Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.) escaped a bases loaded jam in the inning, forcing a groundout to third base.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran tied the game in the top half of the second on a single up the middle by Gutierrez.
  • Morini gave WLC the lead in the third as she singled to left field and drove in a pair of runs.
  • The Warriors tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Senior Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) led off with a single and freshman Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) was hit by a pitch. Morini drove home both runners with a single through the left side of the infield.
  • Penn St.-Berks got one run back in the sixth, but Morini drove home her third run of the game with a single up the middle in the top of the seventh as WLC won 5-2.
  • Ritacco and Morini each finished with three hits in four at-bats, while Morini drove in three runs. Gutierrez recorded the win, her first of the season, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs.

  • Cornell put a runner on base in the top of the first, but senior Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.) snagged a line drive at third base and threw out the runner trying to return to first base to end the inning.
  • The Rams scored in the top of the third on a single, but the Warriors responded quickly, scoring two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The first two runners reached base, and Ritacco doubled to deep left center to score one runner. Ritacco later scored in the inning to give WLC a 2-1 advantage after three.
  • Cornell answered with a nine-run fourth inning to push the score up to 10-2. The Rams recorded six hits in the frame, including three doubles and a home run that scored three runners.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was unable to score in the final two innings and fell vai run-rule.
  • Ritacco, Davis, and sophomore Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) each had a hit in the game, while freshman Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings while being charged with the loss.

  • Four Nittany Lions finished with a pair of hits, including Bri Smith who drove in a run. Melanie Showers was charged with the loss after throwing all 7.0 innings and allowing five runs.
  • Maddy Smith drove in three runs for the Rams, going 2-for-2 and hitting the home run. Jessica Self picked up her second win of the season after giving up a pair of runs.

  • The Warriors return to the diamond with two more games on Thursday against Heidelberg (4-2) and Case Western Reserve (4-2). First pitches will be at 8:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. CST.
