CUW Spoils Warriors' Historic Night

MEQUON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's volleyball team played its first-ever match in program history on Thursday night against NACC rival Concordia Wisconsin. The Warriors fell in three sets to the Falcons inside the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse by scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-18.

  • The Falcons raced out to a quick 13-2 lead in the opening set, with five points coming via service aces. The Warriors were able to force a couple of errors midway through the set to get back within 10, but Concordia Wisconsin scored six consecutive points and claimed the first set by a score of 25-10. Freshman Logan Gryzwa (Delafield, Wis.) recorded the first kill for WLC, along with a service ace in the opening set.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored first in the second set, and the score was even 10-10 midway through. Freshman Grant Wempner (Garden Grove, Calif.) posted a kill for the Warriors, but the Falcons closed the set on a 15-4 run to take a 2-0 match lead.
  • Concordia Wisconsin scored the first three points of the third set but WLC responded, getting a kill from sophomore Joe Flett (St. Anthony, Minn.) and forcing a Falcons error to even the game at four apiece. The hosts answered with six straight points to regain control and pushed the advantage to 22-12. The Warriors went on a 6-1 run late in the set, but CUW closed out the set with a 25-18 win to sweep WLC.

  • The Warriors finished with five blocks and posted a -.205 hitting percentage. Five different players recorded a kill, including Gryzwa, Wempner, Flett, sophomore Matthew Miskowski (La Crosse, Wis.), and junior Logan Ascher (Waukesha, Wis.).
  • Gryzwa totaled a team-high three digs, while junior Sean Daniels (Racine, Wis.) posted a pair of solo blocks.

  • James Althoff finished with a game-high nine kills and posted a .429 hitting percentage. The Falcons finished with a .311 attacking percentage and tallied 32 kills.
  • Concordia Wisconsin recorded 17 service aces, including nine from Althoff.

  • The Warriors play their first-ever home match next Tuesday against cross-town NACC foe MSOE (1-1, 0-0 NACC). First serve inside the Recreation Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
