Big Win Over Ripon Highlights Opening Day Split

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team opened its 2021 season on Saturday with a pair of non-conference games at the Rhinelander Hodag Dome. The Warriors defeated Ripon 11-1 in five innings of their first game, before falling 6-0 to Concordia Wisconsin in game two.

  • Ripon started the first inning by jumping out to a 1-0 lead. In the third, the Red Hawks brought in a new pitcher and the Warriors' run parade started with sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) reaching base with a walk. Senior Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) followed with a line drive up the middle to advance the runner and freshman Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) plated Almodovar. Senior Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.) smacked a two-run double and freshman Ashley Corley (Plainfield, Ill.) also belted a RBI double to left as WLC tallied 11 runs in the inning.
  • Ropas and Lindemann led Wisconsin Lutheran with two RBI each. Almodovar picked up her first win of the season in the circle.

  • The Falcons opened the game with a triple and took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Freshman pitcher Hannah Jordan (Yorkville, Ill.) made her first collegiate appearance in the circle and limited Concordia Wisconsin to one run through four innings.
  • CUW pulled ahead in the fifth inning with a bases-clearing double to clinch the 6-0 win over WLC.

  • Riley Breider led Ripon with two hits and Savanna Trittelwitz was charged with the loss in the circle.
  • Madison Wheat paced the Falcons with a double, triple, and three RBI. Gina Followell tossed all seven innings, allowing just four hits and fanning 10.

  • The Warriors travel to Peoria, Illinois, next Friday for a single game against UW-Stevens Point (2-0) at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
