Softball Drops Nailbiter To Pointers

Box Score

PEORIA, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team was unable to overcome an early two-run deficit, falling 2-1 to UW-Stevens Point on Friday afternoon at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

  • Final Score: UW-Stevens Point 2, Wisconsin Lutheran 1
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (1-2), UW-Stevens Point (3-0)
  • Location: Louisville Slugger Sports Complex, Peoria, Ill.

  • The Pointers pushed a run across in the bottom of the first inning after a leadoff single came around to score on a sacrifice fly. Stevens Point tacked on one more in the second via a two-out single and an error.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran got one back in the second after a walk and a double to left center put runners on second and third with one out. Freshman Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) singled to right to score one run, but the Pointers turned a double play on a double steal attempt to get out of the inning.
  • The Warriors threatened to even the score in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to come up with a hit with runners in scoring position. In the sixth, junior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) drew a walk and advanced to third but UWSP closed the inning with a groundout. WLC opened the seventh inning with a leadoff double from sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) and put runners on second and third after a single. But the Pointers escaped with three strikeouts to hold off the Warriors 2-1.
  • Almodovar connected on a pair of doubles and also pitched all six innings for the Warriors, allowing two unearned runs on four hits. Martin added two hits and drove in WLC's lone run. Wisconsin Lutheran finished with four hits and three walks on the afternoon.

  • Makenna Tkach tossed five and two-thirds innings in the circle, allowing one run and striking out six for her second win of the season.
  • The Pointers finished with four hits and Sammy Buerger produced one RBI with the first-inning sacrifice fly.

  • The Warriors return to Peoria, Illinois, next Friday for a pair of games at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. Wisconsin Lutheran first plays Mount Mary (0-4) with first pitch scheduled for 9:45 a.m. before facing Elmhurst (0-0) at 1:15 p.m. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
