Men's Volleyball Swept By Scarlet Hawks

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) –  The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's volleyball team hosted Illinois Tech on Friday night, falling in three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-10, and 25-16 inside the Recreation Complex. Freshman Grant Wempner (Garden Grove, Calif.) posted four kills and recorded a team-high hitting percentage of .571.

  • Trailing by a couple points early in the first set, consecutive kills from freshman Logan Gryzwa (Delafield, Wis.) tied the set at five apiece. The Scarlet Hawks responded with a 9-2 run to take a 14-7 lead. Gryzwa added another kill late in the set, but Illinois Tech closed out the Warriors with an 11-3 run to claim the opening set.
  • IIT scored the first three points of set two, but WLC answered with three points to even the score. Wempner connected on a kill and added a service ace to tie the game at three. Illinois Tech went on a 9-2 run and led 17-8. Senior Alex Rivera (Milwaukee, Wis.) posted a kill to end the run, but the Scarlet Hawks scored the final seven points to take set two, 25-10.
  • A kill from Wempner and a couple errors from Illinois Tech gave the Warriors an early 3-2 lead in the third set. The Scarlet Hawks responded with four straight points to take the lead, and went ahead 10-5 lead. The Warriors cut the deficit down to two at 12-10 following a kill from junior Logan Ascher (Waukesha, Wis.) but Illinois Tech went on another run and won the third set 25-16 to sweep WLC.

  • Wempner led the team with four kills and posted a team-high .571 hitting percentage. Gryzwa added three kills with a .222 hitting percentage. The Warriors finished with 12 kills and hit -.020 as a team.
  • Ascher and Rivera tied for the team lead with three digs. Freshman Isaac Stellick (Taichung, Taiwan) posted a team-high eight assists.
  • Sophomore Joe Flett (St. Anthony, Minn.) and junior Sean Daniels (Racine, Wis.) each recorded a pair of block assists.

  • The Scarlet Hawks finished with 30 kills and recorded a .389 hitting percentage. Grant Couper led the team with eight kills.
  • Lucas Guanes posted 24 assists and a pair of digs.

  • The Warriors travel to play Concordia Chicago (2-5, 2-4 NACC) on Tuesday night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at WLCSports.com.
