Softball Swept By Unbeaten Spartans

MONTGOMERY, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball was swept in a doubleheader against Aurora on Wednesday afternoon, falling by scores of 12-0 and 9-1 at Bedrosian Stadium.

  • After retiring the Warriors in order in the first, the Spartans scored six times on six hits in the bottom half of the inning. The first run scored via a sacrifice fly, and after five consecutive hits, including a pair of home runs, Aurora led 6-0.
  • The Spartans added two more in the second on a sacrifice fly to center field and a two-out single to left field. Aurora continued to extend the lead with two more in both the third and fourth innings to take a 12-0 advantage into the fifth.
  • Freshman Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) broke up the Spartans no-hit bid with a leadoff double in the fifth inning, but a pair of flyouts and a groundout ended the first game.
  • Martin recorded the lone hit for the Warriors offense in game one, and freshman Hannah Jordan (Yorkville, Ill.) fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing eight runs across two innings.

  • After a scoreless first inning, senior Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) opened the second inning with a double for the Warriors. Junior Katie Scott (Sallisaw, Okla.) reached after being hit by a pitch, and both runners advanced on a groundout. Lindemann scored on a Spartans error, but Scott was thrown out at the plate trying to score the second run.
  • Aurora evened the score at one in the bottom of the second on a RBI double to left field. The Spartans took the lead in the third as a WLC error allowed a pair of unearned runs to score.
  • AU extended the lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning with four runs on four hits including a two-run double to cap the inning.
  • The Warriors put a pair of runners on in the top of the fifth after a walk and a two-out single by sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) placed runners on first and second. Aurora escaped the inning with a flyout to centerfield.
  • The Spartans clinched the game in the sixth inning after two runs scored on a triple to make the score 9-1 after six innings.
  • WLC finished with four hits and stranded six runners, with junior Avery Davis (Cottleville, Mo.) driving in the lone run.
  • Almodovar was charged with the loss, dropping her record to 3-3 on the season.

  • Aurora recorded 14 hits in the first game, with Brianna Lewis finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. In the circle, Hannah Tomasko picked up the win, allowing just one hit across five innings and striking out eight.
  • Josephine Lytton led the Spartans offense in game two, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Courtney Rickard got the win, allowing one run on four hits in six innings.

  • The Warriors return home for a doubleheader on Saturday against Benedictine (3-4). First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
