Warriors Tripped Up By Banana Slugs

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's volleyball team played its first non-conference match in program history on Thursday night, hosting the Banana Slugs from UC Santa Cruz. UCSC hit .414 for the match en route to sweeping the Warriors by scores of 25-8, 25-7, and 25-13.

  • The Warriors scored the first point of the match on a kill from freshman Grant Wempner (Garden Grove, Calif.), but the Banana Slugs responded with nine unanswered points to take control. Following two consecutive points from WLC, UCSC went on separate scoring runs of four and six points and won the opening set 25-8.
  • Santa Cruz opened the second set by scoring 10 of the first 11 points and Wisconsin Lutheran was unable to put together multiple point runs as the visitors took set two 25-7.
  • The Green and White trailed 5-3 in the third set following a kill from sophomore Joe Flett (St. Anthony, Minn.). The Banana Slugs scored the next four points and the Warriors were unable to get their deficit under five points the rest of the way as UC Santa Cruz won 25-13.

  • Wempner led the Warriors with three kills and freshman Isaac Stellick (Taichung, Taiwan) added five assists.
  • Sophomore Matthew Miskowski (La Crosse, Wis.) recorded five digs and WLC totaled three blocks as a team.

  • Colby Hurdle totaled a match-high eight kills and hit .636 to lead the Banana Slugs, who finished the match hitting .414 as a team.
  • UCSC tallied nine service aces and seven block assists.

  • The Warriors play their second straight non-conference match tomorrow night when they travel to Plymouth for a matchup with Lakeland (2-8). First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Muskies defeated the Warriors 3-0 earlier this season in a conference match in Milwaukee.
