Almodovar Leads Warriors To Split With Cougars

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) finished 5-for-6 with seven RBI and also picked up a win in the circle as the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team split a home doubleheader against Concordia Chicago on Wednesday. The Warriors won the first game 17-6 in five innings before falling 13-4 in six innings in game two.

  • A leadoff double and a couple of singles allowed the Cougars to take an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning.
  • The Warriors responded with nine runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Ashley Corley (Plainfield, Ill.) doubled to leadoff the inning, and following a walk, Almodovar drove home two runs with a double to left. After loading the bases with a single and a walk, back-to-back singles scored two more runs while a dropped fly ball allowed two more runners to score. Almodovar came up to bat in the inning for a second time and drove home two more runs with a single, while junior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) crossed the plate on a rundown to put WLC up 9-2.
  • Freshman Bri Biermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) added to Wisconsin Lutheran's lead in the second with a RBI groundout. Concordia Chicago scored once in the top half of the third to cut the deficit to 10-3.
  • The Warriors scored three times in the bottom of the third on five hits, including RBI doubles from Corley and Almodovar. Freshman Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) drove home the final run of the inning with a single to right field.
  • After the Cougars connected on a two-run home run in the fourth, WLC scored four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.) singled home one run and later scored on a throwing error. Almodovar drove home her sixth RBI of the game with a single to put the Warriors ahead by 12 runs.
  • Almodovar finished a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and six RBI. Wisconsin Lutheran recorded 16 hits, with four players posting multiple hits. Martin totaled three hits and Corley doubled twice and scored three runs.
  • Almodovar also picked up the win in the circle to improve to 5-5 on the season. She allowed five earned runs while striking out three in five innings.

  • The Warriors offense started with three runs in the first inning, as Almodovar drove home a run with a single to center field. A Martin double put runners on second and third, and senior Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) singled to right field scoring both runners.
  • Concordia Chicago evened the game in the third inning with runs scoring on a throwing error and a double to center field. The Cougars took the lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run to right field.
  • CUC increased its lead to 8-3 in the fifth inning on a pair of singles. Senior Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.) drove home a run for the Warriors in the bottom of the fifth following a double by Martin.
  • The Cougars pushed their lead to 13-4 with a five-run sixth inning. Concordia Chicago started the scoring with a two-run home run, and a fielding error and couple more hits helped the visitors tack on three more runs.
  • WLC finished with four runs on nine hits, with Ropas, Martin, and Moberg each recording multiple hits. Lindemann drove home a pair of runs and Martin finished with two doubles in the game.
  • Freshman Hannah Jordan (Yorkville, Ill.) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) across three and two-thirds innings.

  • Becky Pieroni and Nia DeGeorge both finished 2-for-3 with two RBI in game one. Pieroni posted a pair of extra-base hits, including a home run. Hailey Howard was charged with the loss, allowing seven earned runs across one and a third innings pitched.
  • The Cougars totaled 15 hits in game two, with five players posting multiple hits. Pieroni homered for the second time on the day and finished with three hits and five RBI. Holly Bathje picked up the win, allowing four runs in six innings in the circle.

  • The Warriors host Concordia Wisconsin (10-4) in a doubleheader on Saturday to open their NACC slate. It will be the first of four consecutive games against the Falcons.
