Warriors Walk-Off 16th-Ranked Raiders For NACC Split

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Freshman Katie Stoltenberg (Lodi, Wis.) delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning as the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team split a doubleheader against No. 16 MSOE on Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors won game one 7-6 in extra innings before MSOE took game two 16-6 in six innings at Neumann Family Softball Field.

  • In the second inning, the Warriors struck for four runs, all coming with two outs. Freshman Bri Biermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) ripped a single through the left side of the infield to score two runs, and freshman Ashley Corley (Plainfield, Ill.) drove home Biermann with a single to center field. Sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) capped the inning with a RBI single to the pitcher.
  • Both teams were retired in order until MSOE took the lead with a six-run fifth inning. The first run scored on a throwing error, and the next two scored via a groundout and a second error. With two outs, the Raiders scored two on a single through the left side and one more on a double to left center.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran evened the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch-hit, two-run home run by freshman Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.).
  • MSOE put two runners on in the top of the seventh, but the inning ended with a double play. In extra innings, both teams put runners in scoring position with two outs, but neither side could come up with the big hit.
  • Heading into the bottom of the 10th, senior Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) led off for the Warriors with a double down the left field line. Following a sacrifice bunt to advance her to third, Stoltenberg delivered a walk-off single to left field on the second pitch she saw for a 7-6 victory.
  • Almodovar finished 3-for-5 as WLC posted 12 hits in the opener. Biermann and Chestolowski each recorded two RBI to lead the team.
  • Almodovar picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle, tossing 5.1 innings in relief while allowing one unearned run with four strikeouts.

  • After MSOE opened game two with two runs in the top of the first, Wisconsin Lutheran answered with five in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) doubled to center field to start the scoring, and Stoltenberg and senior Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.) each had a two-out, two-RBI double to give WLC the three-run lead.
  • The Raiders' offense produced seven runs in the third inning to give the visitors a 9-5 advantage. MSOE recorded a pair of RBI singles, and posted a two-RBI triple and two-run home run to left center.
  • MSOE tacked on two more in the fifth inning before Stoltenberg drove home a run for the Warriors with a groundout in the bottom half of the inning.
  • The Raiders scored five times in the sixth and won via run-rule after retiring WLC in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
  • Martin finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored as the Warriors' offense tallied eight hits.
  • Almodovar was charged with the loss after allowing six runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings pitched.

  • MSOE finished with 12 hits in game one, with four players recording multiple hits. Jenna Trewyn drove in a pair of runs to lead the offense. Lorrin Pondo was saddled with her first loss of the season, allowing seven runs across 9.1 innings in the circle.
  • Kara McKenna finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Grace Salaja also recorded three hits and drove in two runs and scored twice. Emily Wiederholt was awarded her seventh win of the season after allowing six runs in six innings.
