Meurer's OT Strike Sends Warriors To North Division Final

MEQUON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Junior Aedon Meurer (Waukesha, Wis.) scored the game-winning goal on a free kick in overtime as the fourth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team upset top-seeded Concordia Wisconsin 1-0 in the NACC Tournament North Division Semifinal on Thursday afternoon at Fitting Field. Warriors freshman goalkeeper Puma Galvan (Racine, Wis.) stopped 17 shots to preserve the shutout win. It was WLC's first win in Mequon under 21st-year head coach Joe Luedke.

  • Two minutes into the match, the Warriors had the first scoring opportunity following a corner kick. Freshman Tony Bedolla (Joliet, Ill.) put a shot on goal, but the Falcons goalkeeper turned aside the attempt.
  • Concordia Wisconsin dominated the scoring chances for the remainder of the first half, attempting 14 shots with nine on frame. Galvan stopped all nine, including a penalty kick in the 10th minute, to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
  • Both defenses held strong throughout the second half, and the game headed to extra time still tied at 0-0. Galvan finished with eight more saves and Wisconsin Lutheran tallied five shots on target, but the offense couldn't break through in regulation.
  • In the 95th minute, Meurer got a free kick following a Falcons foul just outside the box. The midfielder bent a shot past the keeper that snuck inside the left post to break the scoreless draw and give the Warriors a dramatic overtime victory.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran finished with 13 shots and seven shots on goal, with freshman Ben Meaux (Franklin, Wis.) attempting a team-high four shots. Freshman Alex Garcia (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Warriors with two shots on goal.
  • Galvan recorded a season-high 17 saves to keep the Falcons off the board for his third shutout of the season. In two games against CUW, Galvan has maintained a clean sheet for over 200 minutes in goal with 22 total saves.
  • The win was the first for the Warriors over the Falcons since 2016 (1-0) and the first in Mequon under head coach Joe Luedke

  • The Falcons finished with 29 total shots and 17 shots on target. Gilberto Gomez led CUW with nine shots and five shots on goal and Giampaolo Lassila totaled five.
  • Matthew Klug stopped six of the seven shots he faced in goal for CUW.

  • The Warriors advance to the NACC Tournament North Division Final against the winner of second-seeded MSOE (6-2-0) and third-seeded Marian (4-4-0), who play tonight in Milwaukee.
