Martin Leads Warriors To Season Finale Sweep

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Freshman Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) tallied seven hits, five RBI, and five runs as the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team swept Alverno in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alverno Field. The Warriors won 17-4 in the first game before winning 15-2 in five innings of game two.

  • Martin opened the scoring with a two-out, solo home run to center field in the first inning.
  • In the third, a couple of singles and a fielding error allowed senior Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) to score to put the Warriors up two. Alverno answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to even the score.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran regained the lead with a three-run fourth, capped by a two-run home run by Martin.
  • The Inferno trimmed their deficit down to one on solo home runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.
  • WLC scored six times in the sixth inning to open up a seven-run advantage. Lindemann stole home to start the scoring, and two more scored on a hit by freshman Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.). Freshman Bri Biermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) plated one more and freshman Ashley Corley (Plainfield, Ill.) stole home for the fifth run. Junior Katie Scott (Sallisaw, Okla.) drove in Biermann with a single to give the Warriors an 11-4 lead.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran tacked on six more in the seventh, including a two-run home run by senior Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.). Freshman Katie Stoltenberg (Lodi, Wis.) drove in a run, and doubles by freshman Bre Hoy (McHenry, Ill.) and junior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) resulted in two more runs.
  • Martin posted a 4-for-5 day at the plate with two home runs, four runs, and three RBI. The Warriors finished with a season-high 18 hits, with 12 different players recording at least one.
  • Freshman Kacey Mietsner (Elwood, Ill.) picked up her second win of the season in the circle after holding Alverno to one run over four innings in relief.

  • In the first inning, Martin put the Warriors on the board with a double down the right field line to score Moberg.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran added four more in the second as Hoy drove in one with a single and back-to-back doubles by Lindemann and Martin resulted in three runs.
  • Sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) connected on a home run to center field in the third inning to put WLC up six runs.
  • The Warriors offense produced five more runs in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 11-0. A single by Martin and an error on the play resulted in a runner scoring from first, and Corley drove in a run with a double to right center. Two more errors allowed two more runs to score and Chestolowski capped the inning with a RBI single to left center.
  • In the fifth, the Green and White added three more with two coming on a double by Biermann. Ropas closed the scoring for WLC with a single to left field.
  • Alverno scored twice in the bottom half of the inning but the Warriors picked up the sweep with a 15-2 win in five innings.
  • Martin and Scott both finished 3-for-3 in the game with Martin recording a pair of RBI. The Warriors tallied six doubles in the game and finished with 16 hits.
  • Mietsner earned her second victory of the day with five innings pitched and six strikeouts in the circle.

  • Izzy Torres and Maggie Wilmot both homered for Alverno in game one. Natalie Akin was charged with the loss after allowing 12 runs in 5.2 innings.
  • Sara Jankowski recorded a pair of hits for the Inferno in the second game. Izzy Torres fell to 0-5 and allowed 12 runs in 3.2 innings.

  • The Warriors wrap up their 2021 season with a 15-23 overall record and an 8-12 mark in the NACC South. WLC closed the season on a four-game winning streak.
