UC Santa Cruz Takes Two From Wisconsin Lutheran On Sunday

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's volleyball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses to UC Santa Cruz on Sunday morning inside the Recreation Complex. The Banana Slugs swept the Warriors in both contests of their Midwest road trip by 3-0 finals.

  • The Warriors trailed 5-1 in the first set but climbed back to take its first lead at 9-8 following a service ace from sophomore Logan Gryzwa (Delafield, Wis.). The first set, which featured nine ties and six lead changes, saw WLC leading 17-16 before the Banana Slugs scored four straight and went on to win the opening set 25-19.
  • UCSC broke open a 3-3 tie in the second set by pulling ahead for a 10-4 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran cut its deficit to four at 10-6, but four straight from the visitors gave them a 15-6 advantage. The second set finished 25-13 in favor of the Banana Slugs.
  • UC Santa Cruz jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the third set and the Green and White couldn't get any closer than seven points as they dropped the third set 25-8.
  • Gryzwa and freshman Jay Thammavongsa (Franklin, Wis.) had three kills apiece, while Thammavongsa added five assists and six digs. Junior Matthew Miskowski (La Crosse, Wis.) also collected six digs.
  • After four ties and two lead changes in the first set of the second match, the Banana Slugs broke away from a 5-5 tie score with an 11-1 run. UCSC won the first set 25-10.
  • The Warriors led 2-1 early in the second set, but UC Santa Cruz erased that deficit by taking an 11-4 lead. The visitors built a 22-9 lead before taking set two 25-13.
  • WLC found itself looking up at an 8-2 deficit in the third set, but came within 13-10. The hosts couldn't get any closer than five the rest of the way as they fell 25-13.
  • Gryzwa led Wisconsin Lutheran with five kills, while Thammavongsa added eight assists. Miskowski led the way with seven digs, while Gryzwa and Thammavongsa had six each.

  • The Warriors travel to Rockford on Tuesday to play their first road match of the season against the Regents (0-6). The non-conference match starts at 7 p.m. with live coverage links available at WLCSports.com.
